It probably won't be next year. Game doesn't draw anywhere near the interest it did in the 80's & 90's.

If it wasn't for the bands probably would have been let go a long time ago.

Thanks, appreciate that.
Interesting topic to me.

Louisiana tried to consolidate a school with a 5% 6 year grad rate that serves as little more than a Pell Grant scam and a place for black legislators to give their relatives high paying jobs. The uproar against shuttering it was insane.
Cronyism at its finest.

I am not going to call older SU fans bandwaggoners but LSU becoming a national power has greatly affected those who would normally support SU. Regardless of reason ex. family members deciding to go to LSU or just pay a little more money for a more quality game.
I'm not a bandwagon LSU fan. I'm black and I supported LSU since 1989. I've had friends play for lsu. Those friends could have gone anywhere in the country but chose to stay home and represent the home school. Players like that is why lsu has a lot of black fans.
The downfall of southern was the administration and AD stealing funds and doing other crooked shite for years finally caught up with them.

I'm just glad there are people out there who can discuss race & how it factors into everyday occurrences, no matter how big or small or even in the world of sports. Of course, any discussion of race will bring out ignorance but honest, intelligent opinions on the topic, are always a breath of fresh air.

Poor management might explain the decline of the university overall, but racial progress is the reason for the decline of Black college football.

The ratings for most college games are crap. It's Saturday afternoon so it's not like the networks are counting on those ratings for survival anyway.

This is true. The turnaround & rise of the La Tech, ULL & ULM programs have affected both Grambling & Southern. This isn't the sole factor but just one of several factors.

this game won't get the publicity and ratings of LSU v. McNeese
Last I checked LSU wasn't a shitty team.

I agree.
LSU is way more diverse than it was 20 years ago. My wife received her masters 2 years ago. That's something black people rarely saw when I was young growing up in BR if you didn't play sports.

This is so true. The way of thinking in the black community in their feelings towards getting an education or playing sports at LSU has greatly changed as a whole over the last 20 years. Unlike many white families, its just beginning to become a tradition for the next generation to attend LSU & so is the case for young black males who play football.

I agree kind of, while it's true that peoples attitudes toward race have progressed, I think the fact that some of these schools(HBCU's)are no longer places parents want their kids to go to school also plays a role. I don't think it's a coincidence that schools like ULM, Tech, and ULL for that matter are getting better athletes/recruits, while Grambling's and Southern's talent pool is on the decline.
GSU
SU
I wish I had time to compare the list to the other "shitty" schools in LA, but I'm sure you the decline in NFL quality talent disappeared around the mid 90's.

Those schools might have affected Black college football a little, but I think the intergration of the bigger southern conferences (eg. SEC, ACC, Southwest/Big 12) affected it a lot more. Mississippi Valley State will never get another Jerry Rice again. Keep in mind that even after the SEC integrated, the position of quarterback was still considered off limits for the most part. Steve McNair was recruited by every SEC school but was told that he would have to play defensive back, so he was forced to go to an HBCU to keep his quarterback dreams alive. If McNair had been born 20 years later, he would be playing quarterback at an SEC school. A textbook example of racial progress was the Florida team that came to Baton Rouge in 2009, Tim Tebow's senior year. That team started five Black interior offensive linemen and two White wide recievers.

Let me let you in on a little secret. Most of us black folks don't watch BET. The classic has been on NBC for decades. There is a huge chance this is the last year it will be though because its losing State Farm as a sponsor.

To give more perspective to the youngsters around here, the Bayou Classic was a yearly sellout until the 80's and in the early 70's, before there was cable TV, the only two schools with nationally televised weekly football shows were Notre Dame and Grambling. Also, note that there was a step decrease in attendence after Katrina.
