Wtf? Blatant mockery and negligence of the sport...who allowed this to happen?

They're both close to the ocean like the ACC

They ARE in the ACC because the Pacific touches the Atlantic.

The Big 10 did this when they created that fake arse alliance w/the Pac 12 and ACC that was really just a secret plot to gather info to see who they could steal away.

Because it doesn’t matter and nobody else wants them.

Because college football is broken and nobody is trying to fix it anytime soon.

It's beyond stupid how we went away from at least some idea of regionality to the conferences

The only advantage of having Cal and Stanford in the ACC is for bragging rights when it comes to academics.

When USC, UCLA, Washington and Oregon left the Pac 12 for the BIG 10, Cal and Stanford were left out. They could have stayed with Oregon State and Washington State in a very weak PAC 12.
Instead they looked for a home in the other Power 4 conferences. The ACC needed to expand to match the SEC and BIG 10. Since both Stanford and Cal are very competitive in non-football sports and are both very good Academically, it was a good match between these schools and the ACC. These teams, along with SMU, give the ACC a national footprint.

My understanding is that the B1G presidents were perfectly happy to add Cal and Stanford, for the obvious academic reasons. But Fox said they would not pay any additional money if those two were added. Of course no one wants to dilute the pot, so that's what killed it.

Also I think the idea was that the ACC wanted to add teams in case the ones suing to leave the conference were successful. They needed the numbers to keep the conference viable.
