Why doesn't the SWAC champ participate in the FCS playoff??

What's their problem??

Payout is better for a shitty bowl where they’ll get stomped

The conferences’ teams would generally be non-competitive in the FCS Playoffs, so the SWAC and MEAC send their champions to the Celebration Bowl to play for the “Black College Football National Championship.”

Usually yes. Jackson State this year could have been a threat.

They like keeping the “unknown” of how they’d do in the playoff alive instead of playing and getting smoked in the first round every season.

Because they would rather have the SWAC Championship Game and the Celebration Bowl against the MEAC Champion, and the payouts associated with them, than participate in the FCS Playoffs.
Besides, the SWAC doesn't exactly have a great history in the playoffs. Florida A&M got a rare (for the SWAC) at-large invite last year, and got beatdown by Southeastern last year, who then got beatdown the next week.
SWAC teams just aren't that good compared to the rest of the FCS.

sugar71 will be here shortly to tell you that they could hang with North Dakota St.

How many times has this question been asked on here

This week was the second round of the FCS playoffs.
The SWAC makes FAR more money and presige with the SWAC Champ Game and the Celebration Bowl, than they would in an FCS playoff.
How do I put this nicely? Today's HBCU football is about the bands and the pagentry and the pride of the alums, it ain't about the quality of the football on the field.
I mean... look how quickly Deion got JSU to be "successful"... and he didn't even have to try that hard.

Don't let sugar71 read this or he'll write a essay on how great the teams are using HOF players from the 70s

Elon-Furman: 2717
Davidson- Richmond: 3000
Fordham-N Hampshire: 2989
St Francis- Delaware :4629
G Webb- E Kentucky :4973
Idaho- SE Louisiana:3174
N Dakota- Weber State:3000
Montana-SE Mizzou : 13400( Nice crowd which pushed the entire 8 games over 30k)
The entire 8 games barely matches the Bayou Classic Battle of the Bands( 32k this year) & Game ( 62k). Plus the Swac Championship (40-50k) & C Bowl ( 30-40ish). The schools & Conference has negotiated their own contracts( not BCS money) & get these games Nationally televised without the NCAA. Until these games are no longer viable ( Celebration Bowl may be first) then there is no interest in losing money in the FCS playoffs. No interest in traveling to Elon, St Francis , N Hampshire to play in front of 3-4 k fans.

I wondered about that too- especially since there has been so much noise about J-State, and the self-promoting Sanders. Here is some insights on the HBCS-FCS absence.
13 HBCU (SWAC & MEAC) teams that have played in the FCS postseason. They have totaled 62 games...and won 8 of them That is not a typo- they are 8-54. Five of those 8 wins were from FL A&M. J-State is 0-12 all time.
The other wins were from NCA&T, 1-5. And SC-State is 2-6. That leaves ten teams with zero wins in 32 games.
This why I cannot take Sanders winning in the SWAC as a serious accomplishment
