Why does hockey get so much hate?

I’ve been watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs and haven’t enjoyed watching sports this much in quite some time. This years first round of the playoffs was actually the most watched of all time so I think it’s growing in popularity but people either absolutely hate it or love it. I feel like there is no in between.

Hockey is cool, but it is a very expensive sport to take up (equipment) and can’t be organically played year round without access to specialized facilities. Most people can’t play it at all without those facilities. I played a little pickup on the frozen ponds as a kid, but we never got into much because of the short window of opportunity. And even with the natural ice, they had to flood the surface so that it was smooth enough for the puck to glide.
Got hurt a lot more in pickup hockey than I did playing tackle football in pads.

Who hates hockey? I have great memories of watching the kingfish when I was a kid

I don’t really think people hate hockey so much as it’s just not on a lot of people’s radar. Especially if you grew up in Louisiana

Its one of those sports I dont mind watching live.
On television it is obstructed in a lot of ways and has been historically hard to watch as opposed to basketball or football. In the 80s and 90s it was hard to see a puck on non HD smaller screens.
And in the south, we really didn't have much ice to get a love for the sport. Closest we could have was street hockey and that feels like thats to hockey what arena football is to FB.

Play off hockey is pretty dang awesome actually. I don't pay much attention during reg season as I don't have a team... But playoff hockey - they flat get after it
I am envious though. Hockey senems great 1) you know pretty much how long you are going to be there (under 2 hrs) 2) don't get sunburnt 3) fast paced

I hate watching hockey on tv, but it’s pretty good in person. I have many memories of going to ice gator games and also played inline hockey for 8 years.

It's the most exciting sport to watch and it's really not debatable.

I couldn't be any more indifferent.

B/c people don't understand the rules. That's a big part of it.

OP made up the hate part

All the millions of people who don't like to watch it would probably debate you on that.
And honestly hockey has a lot of fans like these, which explains the OPs notion that people "hate" the sport.

It doesn’t. It’s just not part of the South’s culture and is a cold weather sport so it’s not followed as much on the boards. Also like it or not, it’s a “Northern” aka yankee sport which doesn’t help. Expansion into the south is definitely helping and I hope it continues to grow Over the next few generations.
Very few people go to a live game and aren’t entertained, it’s got a nice skill and toughness element to it.
It’s also a very expensive sport to get into but hopefully that is changing.

I don't really ever see hockey get hate.
Plenty in the south don't like it or mostly don't get it through zero experiences with it but still don't rip it or hate on it that I see.

It's more unfamiliarity than anything. When I first moved down to LA in HS some people joked about me playing hockey, but once they saw me play, they gained a respect.
