The entire state of Texas has ONE college football FBS national championship in the last 52 years.

That’s with 5 (soon to be 6) Power 5 programs and 12 total FBS programs. It’s also while being in the state that always finishes in the top 3 in the country for top recruits produced annually.

Football national championships (FBS) by state since 1970:

Alabama - 11
Florida - 11
California - 4
Georgia - 4
Nebraska - 4
Oklahoma - 4
Indiana - 3
Louisiana - 3
Pennsylvania - 3
South Carolina - 3
Ohio - 2
Colorado - 1
Michigan - 1
Tennessee - 1
Texas -1
Utah - 1
Washington - 1

Thoughts?

The Power 5 thing is about to die off and the Big 12 will not be considered a major conference. I’m not sure it will exist at all in 5 years

As far as what happened to them. Oklahoma joining their league crushed the last 25 years. Not sure about the 70s and 80s.

It’s too political. Kids in HS have had enough of Texas by the time college rolls around and they go out of state.

Because the Texas recruits go to the SEC.

Because Louisiana takes all of their talent. We own the state of Texas when it comes to sports.

Texas is 3x bigger than say, Georgia, with 5-6 P5 programs. Plus Oklahoma who steals a ton of our recruits.

Georgia has one. Texas is over saturated with P5 college football teams. It’s amazing that any of them can ever even finish ranked.

Georgia has two P5 programs. Yes, Tech sucks now, but they won a natty in ‘90.

Also, Bama, Auburn, Clemson, South Carolina and Tennessee rely HEAVILY on recruiting Georgia, so the Oklahoma issue is far from unique to Texas.

Ok well Texas has 6 P5 programs that can actually recruit well. All are better than Tech.

These states also recruit from texas. Including Georgia. Add Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi.

Texas had a team in the national championship this year and one in 2009. They won in 2005.

That’s more than the states of Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi can claim. I don’t things are as bad as you say. If recruits were required to stay in the same state then you might have an argument.

Yup, and the same happens in Florida and California. Which is why the Oklahoma issue you brought up is not an issue.

If Georgia isn’t a satisfactory comparison, why not Florida? They get poached from everybody in the country and all three major programs there have churned out multiple natties.

Florida’s recent success seems about on par with Texas to me. Historically UT is better than any Florida school and is the only blue blood but I would say FSU, Miami, and UF are all above A&M (the next best Texas school historically?). Why is this? Who knows. Texas has historical dominance which seems to dominate the state of texas and no other Texas school has done anything in comparison. It seems to be more spread out in Florida.

Florida is probably a much more attractive place to live than texas (or probably anywhere else in the south) so I wonder if that has any slight bearing on it.

every Florida team fell off when recruiting became national

As for Texas, we overrate their HS ball because their schools are bigger than everyone else’s and think it must translate to college.

They literally just had a team win a playoff game and play for the title.

It's going to be fine, it'll have competitive, entertaining football with teams that sometimes make a run (just like the ACC and Pac) and hands down the best basketball conference in the country.

Florida teams started to recede with the ascendancy of UCF in the late 90's and early 00's. You now had 4 D1 teams in the state.....throw in USF back in 2004 -2007 and Jim Leavitt stealthily poaching kids from Miami an UF and you had a dilution. Plus you had schools like Michigan going to places like Deerfield Beach and getting top recruits.

In the 80s and 90s Florida was the place for football. All those players from St Thomas Aquinas and other Miami schools made news. Then someone also found out about the kids out of Belle Glade and places like Pahokee which before were exclusively Miami and UF.
