re: Why do some golfers “lose It” when they are still in their prime?

I blame technology. Launch monitors (I have one) can be a bad thing sometimes. Just so much information that you can get caught up with tinkering too much.

This stuff is why I appreciate Phil Mickelson. These guys won’t even sniff his career numbers and he did it during Tigers prime. Only players I think have a chance to catch Phil are Rory and Justin Thomas.
I thought Dustin Johnson could make a run but was wrong about that.
No way JT catches Phil's career.
Scottie is the best player since prime Tiger so he certainly has a shot. Rory will end with probably as many or more wins (though not as many PGA Tour wins). Hard to say on majors but I feel like he has to win one more at some point. Phil won his first major at 33, Rory is still *only* 35. But is he ends with similar career wins and less majors, you'd have to give the nod to Phil.
Scottie, Rory, and Brooks if he can ramble off another two majors would be the guys who have a shot.

possibly now Max Homa and Viktor Hovland.
Hovland had an injury. Give him time and I think he'll start winning again.

I know his wrist played a factor in that but still
well its kind of a big factor

It makes it even more impressive when guys stay on top for a decade plus
you mean #1 or "just" in the top 10? Cause a decade seems like a long time for anyone not Tiger or Jack to do that.

I think injury and general wear and tear have a lot more to do with guys falling off than we would think for a sport like golf.

I don’t think DJ ever had that drive to get to it. I personally think that when he was at his peak, he was the most talented player in the world. But he just never had that killer instinct to go out and grab a tournament by its throat on Sunday. He was the king of firing off a 65 on Saturday to get into the top 5 on Sunday and then going out and shooting a 72 Sunday.

Jordan Spieth might win 10+ majors and now he can’t even make it into the field at the Arnold Palmer (I know his wrist played a factor in that but still).
I remember him getting his dick sucked soooooooooo much back in 2010-2011.
I kept telling everyone he would never come close to Tiger.
Consistency is the hardest thing in golf.

Agree with everything. DJ also didn't win his first major until he was like 32 years old. He was never going to threaten any major record.

Eh, seemed that way in majors but not really in general. He's still 3rd in active players PGA Tour wins with 24 only behind Tiger and Rory, 9 more than the next guy. You don't win 24 times on tour without some killer instinct.
I was a pretty big DJ fan, unfortunately his competitive days in majors seems to be over.

I think you are maybe slightly off on the years here

For his personality, least surprising thing ever when he got a big bag from LIV that his golf game would crater. He has nothing really driving him anymore.
It was crazy seeing Grant Horvat and Phil smoke he and his brother in a youtube match. DJ and his brother lost 5 and 6 and didn't win a single hole.

Phil’s playing great right now at 54 f’ing years old
Ehh… I mean… not really. He played well a week ago but outside of that he’s been pretty terrible comparatively to his peers.

You don’t luck into winning 13 years in a row and spend 130 weeks at world number 1 without effort. DJ’s a lot smarter than he’d have everyone believe. There’s no doubt he went to LIV for the money and doesn’t work like he used to but he’s also 40 and didn’t make that a secret

I mean it's pretty easy to see how he's doing compared to his peers. He's 15th in points (ahead of Bryson) and only played in 3 of the 4 events. Don't really see that as terrible by any measure.

Pretty small sample size you’re using there. 15th out of 54 isn’t all that great anyways. He finished 48th last year. Again, he had a good 3rd place finish a week ago, and maybe is starting to play better, but he’s currently 336th on Data Golf.

Fair enough if you're factoring in last year. Then yea, it was pretty terrible. But the poster did say right now, so I was just assuming it was talking about this season.

Everyone thinks DJ was a world class athlete who had tons of natural talent. Someone once posted he could've been a pro in any of the big three sports. Dude worked his butt off, like every other pro golfer. Always thought his move to LIV did the most damage to his career accomplishments, more than the others. Thought he had a British Open in him.

Early Spieth was so cool, so unrattled, that I wondered if he were hypnotized to be as concentrated as he appeared to be.

I was at a 4 handicap when I blew out a disk in my back, on the golf course, at age 39. It took a real toll on me. I was able to get back to an 8-9 handicap after a year of PT and another year of intense practice, but then at age 47 was still playing well, not as good as I was before the surgery, but well enough to win some tournaments in the B flight. Then, out of the blue, I developed a really bad case of tendinitis in my left wrist. It was almost 18 months before I could hit a ball again without a stinger in my wrist that usually made me drop the club. After that, my game was just gone. I still get out once in a while, but I can't seem to break 80 any more and usually play in the high 80's and low 90's. Now that I'm in my late 60's and retired, I might try to get in some range time, but it really is difficult to retrain your body and get back some of the old muscle memory once your body doesn't cooperate like it did in the years past.
