You could make the case that Simmons would have barely been a top 5 pick in last year's draft.

This is absurd.

Towns might end up being a better pro but Ben's a better prospect. In hindsight, Porzingod can be a better pro but no one was saying this before the draft.

Russell, Okafor? Nah.

If he doesn't have to go to the 76'ers it would be a blessing in disguise.

Kid putting up a historic rookie season "might" be a better pro

You watch Russell lately? You forget the hype for Okafor heading in to his season at Duke?

Ingram is even worse on defense. Even with that, his skillset is not nearly as rare as Simmons.

dude just hasnt been under the microscope like Simmons. People are blaming LSUs season on him when Johnny Jones is a terrible gameday coach

Okafor had the most hype last year, yet Simmons has far eclipsed him. Which is why it's fricking absurd you'd say Simmons would barely be a top-5 pick last year, even with hindsight.

Towns has been great, I'm not diminishing him at all, but no one thought he'd be this good so early. It's clear you're letting articles influence your opinion, not going to waste my time. When Ben is balling out next year, I won't bump threads to rub it in.

Not followed anyone close other than the Spurs, but Why would you pass on Dunn if you are Philly, Milwaukee, NOLA, etc if got first pick?

Charlotte has Kemba Walker and another guard correct?

You take Ingrahm or Simmons over Dunn?

Looking at it from the Bucks and Philly viewpoint (which is wrong probably) you have a good front court but terrible 1.

Dunn is IMO the best player in NCAA, plays the 1, and is 6'3".

I guess there is the guy from Croatia someone talked about. But I think you need a 1 to win in the NBA.

it's very popular right now to downplay Simmons' potential, here and everywhere else.

was he over-hyped a bit? Yes
was this a disappointing season for his team? Yes
Are there now obvious flaws or weaknesses in his game? Yes

But he still put up historic #'s (20-12-5) on a really really poorly coached team, with no leadership, and a ton of chemistry problems. His length, athleticism, and skills will still almost guarantee him the #1 pick. And he will have a successful NBA career. Will he be the next LBJ or KD, probably not. But to say he's not worth a top pick is fricking delusional.

yes. just look at brandon ingram. he checks every box of tools. just needs to fill his frame. really the only thing you worry about ben simmons is whether or not he has a killer mindset and his shot. however, i think once he develops a shot, the attitude will come

agreed. thats why i think hes the 3rd best prospect in this draft. i go ingram, simmons, dunn, brown, valentine

yea, bender. i personally dont see it with him

Yes I am letting high level scouts with direct access to NBA front offices influence my opinion. The horror.

I also watched the guy play probably 15 times this season.

The kid can't play halfcourt basketball against SEC defenses. It is going to take some time for him to ball out. But please to come back and bump threads where I have something to the contrary of him being well deserving of a top 2 pick in this draft and him turning out to be a really good pro.

I'll add you to list of odd people that think if you don't agree that Simmons is the next Magic Johnson then you are wrong.

Cmon man.

Simmons flaws were well exposed but I think all things considered he lived up to his prospect hype and surpassed it. The situation around him just sucked and he showed a bit immaturity at the end of a tough season.

I think if you put Simmons at Duke and Ingram at LSU that Simmons is the unquestioned number 1 prospect.

The questioning about Simmons game came from DX and guys like Vecenie well before the season ever started

This. It's a combination of prospect fatigue and LSU not having a great year as a team. If he was on a team where he was about to go into the tournament and show out on the big stage it would start the hype train all over again. He's been overanalyzed and picked apart at this point and now his season is over

I've compared his game to Lamar Odom on here before and I will stick by that

This was more of a team issue than a Simmons issue. Post feeds for example have been a nightmare to watch.

I don't there was better possible timing for this to come up

My favorite part of the Simmons backlash now is that literally nothing has changed about him. Even the negatives are the same.

eta: Even better

@Mike_Schmitz
FWIW Simmons' mentality and defensive effort has always been a concern, even before LSU. From his preseason vid:

Exactly, that's why I said he surpassed his expectations. Those guys were talking about both him and Ingram being in the Wiggins/Jabari class of prospects just like 2 weeks ago. Not that much has changed because of the bad end to the season.
