They have two transcendent talents on the same team and are still 19 games back in their division

They’ve had Mike Trout for a decade and only made the playoffs once, getting swept by the Royals in the first round.

I don’t get how they could never build a competitive team around Trout and especially now with Shohei Ohtani

They've had some huge misses in Free Agency with Hamilton, CJ Wilson, Albert Pujols, Rendon, Upton, etc...

They haven't developed a solid nucleus in the minors although Marsh is looking good.

They haven't developed a solid pitcher since Jered Weaver

That’s what happens when you invest almost a BILLION dollars in 50% of your team and leave the other half barren and useless.

who would have thought bringing a guy with past cocaine issues to the cocaine capital of the country was a bad idea?

Albert Pujols

there's always been rumors that he's probably 3-4 years older than he says he is.
meaning they more than likely paid a 36 year old who is starting his decline like a 32 year old who should have maintained a few more years.

Hamilton had cleaned up and was sober for a number of years. I believe in an interview he admitted to struggling in L.A. and then going back to some drugs. He was removed from his comfort zone in Texas.

Albert is really like 50

They spend more than a lot of "mediocre" teams do, but it's always weird signings. Often signing players in free agency after one break out all-star season. I think their owner is probably tired of things not working out with big signings.

For 10 years they were trapped under Albert Pujols 10-yr/$240 million contract. He'd made the All-Star game 9 times as a Cardinal so the Angles signed him to a huge contract and in the 10 years in Anaheim he made the All-Star game once. He slugged .447 with the Angels after slugging .617 with the Cardinals.

In 2007 they signed Gary Matthews Jr. to a five-year/$50 million contract after he'd been an All-Star with the Rangers (in a contract season). He hit .248/.325/.383 (.708 OPS) with the Angels after a season of .313/.371/.495 (.866 OPS) in his All-Star season.

In 2012 they signed Josh Hamilton to a five-year/$125 millon contract. The year prior to signing with the Angels he had hit .304/.364/.549 (.913 OPS), the he signs with the Angels and suddenly it was .255/.316/.426 (.741 OPS). A lot of that can be explained away by just saying "drugs" but the fact remains they paid an All-Star price for a player who never was for them.

In 2018 it was Zach Cozart, he wasn't very good with the Reds until he had one weird breakout season in his contract year. A career .247 hitter (I know BA isn't a great stat) suddenly hit .297, career .399 slugging went for .548 that year, hit 87 career home runs and 24 of them came that year. It didn't make sense to sign that to a big contract but the Angels did... a three-year/$38 million contract.

They signed Anthony Rendon to a 7yr/$245 million contract in 2020 and he's played 60 games in 2020, 58 games in 2021, and 45 games in 2022 and he's been shut down for the season.

L.A. is probably the absolute worst place for a recovering coke addict to voluntarily go.

the crazy thing is that ballpark plays as an extreme hitter's park too, so you would think these guys numbers should go up.

You pretty much nailed it. They’ve whiffed badly on FA signings and haven’t built up much of a farm system.

The FA signings tell me that ownership is trying, but they just keep missing.

They're the West Coast version of the Mets/Jets -- gambling big on free agents that don't pan out, poor management, the little brother franchise in a gigantic market.

It all goes back to the Dave Henderson home run in 86.

They’ve spent the last decade paying past their prime stars for the player they used to be instead of the player they are right now. Also after Ohtani and Syndergaard, they have no pitching.

Deters hasn't been bad and Lorenzen has been serviceable.... Sandoval has been fantastic for them, outside of Ohtani he is their best pitcher

They think they can buy their way to wins like the Dodgers and Yankees but A) mostly forgot to supplement those players with quality home grown talent (other than Trout) and B) have almost unanimously struck out on the big signings.

The other cities in the same range for that issue would be Miami and NYC.

The Mets and Yankees have had a ton of guys with coke issues over the years. I remember going to Spring Training in the 90s and seeing Pascual Perez being ferried to the team’s camp by a chauffeured limo, most likely because he would either go buy drugs or get lost on the highway if he drove himself.

Hamilton never had any drug or alcohol issues with the Angels. There were a lot of concerns that he would when he left the Rangers because they had a strong support structure in place that the Angels weren’t going to provide. He couldn’t even pump his own gas while in Texas because he couldn’t trust himself to carry a credit card. Either his wife or a personal manger carried his wallet.

He did relapse shortly before the Angels traded him back to the Rangers, but it was before the season while rehabbing.

Those stats don’t tell the whole story. He started that season on fire. His first 2 months were unbelievable, then he fell off a cliff.

He started playing better in August, but then missed several games for odd reasons. Once because the sun was too bright. Another time he claimed he drank too many Red Bulls.

The Rangers lost the division when they were swept by the A’s to end the season. It was a huge series and Hamilton was awful, and his effort was half-assed. He was barely waving at pitches.

There were always a lot of red flags with him, but that 2012 season was troubling. There were major concerns about his play the majority of that season.

He also turned 32 at the start of his first season with the Angels, and he spent years abusing his body. Even on the field he was a big guy that would crash into fences and steal bases. That takes a toll on someone with his frame over time.

They didn’t have bad luck. They ignored all the warning signs.

They signed Pulos 10 years ago? I never would have guessed it was that long ago.
