I mean, Lynn Swann never won an MVP and never lead the league in receptions or yards. In fact, he was only top 10 in receptions twice, and never top 5. He was top 10 in yards only three teams, and top 5 only once (4th). He also had a very short career, and retired at age 30. He's essentially in the Hall for one catch, which is insane.
Swann is FAR worse of a selection than Namath. He wasn't even the best receiver on his own team. But Canton has felt the need to cram in every member of the 70s Steelers into the Hall.

Swann is much worse than Namath.
Parcells wanted to "buy the groceries" and later in his career had the juice to ask for that authority. No coach has won without great players, so how can you hold it against him? The previous coach didn't win with LT, Simms and Carson.

Maybe Bill Parcells: Mr. "I buy the groceries but the only reason I won the Super Bowl was because I INHERITED Lawrence Taylor, Phil Simms, and Harry Carson"

Not saying that he wasn't In fact, his contribution off the field, and cultural significance helped him get inducted. If he was no personality and played in Minnesota. He would not be in the HoF.

Ok i'll push on Swann and Namath

Massamino or Namath?
What else did Massinino do? I can agree Namath should not be in, but put your own dislike aside.

Da fuq? How can you quantify that? I'm not sure that's a real thing. So he played for a big team in New York? Good for him. Thats likely why he got any attention at all. See Tim Tebow, or Mark Sanchez. Both suck, but you hear about them all the time because they play in New York. Back in Namath's time he may be one of the only guys anyone heard about.
He just played football, all of that other shite is just that, shite. Made up and entirely subjective. Joe Namath is a terrible HOFer.

Posters in this thread need to realize that the Basketball Hall of Fame is much different then the Baseball and Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Of course it did. and that's not invalid, if its used to augment an already strong case. I'm ultimately against Namath's selection, but he's pretty borderline and I don't think his selection is an outrage.

Because every time you hear about him, that's the quote. But when he "bought the groceries" in Dallas and Miami, what happened?
Maybe George Seifert should be in the Hall of Fame too. He won as many Super Bowls with someone else's players as Parcells did.
I don't have a personal agenda with Namath. I just cite the stats. He gets too much credit for "The Guarantee." People act like he was T.O. running his mouth to everybody who would listen, when in reality it was an impromptu comment out of frustration because the media wouldn't stop harassing him about how the Jets were going to get their asses kicked. They wanted a story, and they hounded Namath until he gave it to them.

Phil Knight from Nike in the NBA HOF. Dumbest inductee ever.
phil knight and nike's influence on basketball and sports in general cannot be understated. athletes are the biggest global celebrities because of what nike and jordan started in the 80s.
phil knight being in the basketball hall of fame is similar to the miami heat retiring jordan's #23. its about contributions to the game/sport.

But his final 15 years associated with the NFL netted 0 playoff wins. He certainly didn't stick out as one of the all time greats or better than the average coach/GM/whatever role he was in for the final 1.5 decades of his career.

Why would Pete Maravich not deserve to be in the basketball HOF?
And how many people in this thread are going to fail to realize that there isn't an NBA HOF?

Ray Schalk. 18 seasons 11 career HRs .253 BA .656 OPS

According to Larry King (then a Miami DJ) who was present, the reporters kept nagging Namath, "Are you gonna guarantee a Jets victory???". Fed up with the question and hoping to shut them up, Namath muttered under his breath, "Yeah".

Schalk is only in the Hall because he was one of the Clean Sox. Which still gives him a better case than Lindstrom.

Are you conceding that he wasn't an elite NBA player?

I'm not conceding anything. I think the fact that he made the 50th anniversary team for the NBA speaks to him being an elite player.
But had he never stepped foot on a NBA floor, he'd still deserve to be in the basketball HOF.

Bert Blyleven. Only made 2 all-star teams and was never the best player on his own team. Was a pretty good player for a long time and compiled enough stats to make him look like a HOFer.

He doesn't make that team if he's still alive.
