Hill was one of the classiest people there ever was. And they broke the mold with Uncle Bobby, hell of a driver even though he was crazy as a bedbug.
True story, Uncle Bobby himself told it at a "roast" several years ago. Back in the 1960s Uncle Bobby, Parnelli Jones (another badass, supposedly he was the only guy on the planet Foyt wouldn't mess with) and David Pearson were hanging out at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, which of course the Unser family were kings of. Pearson wanted to go up the course, so Parnelli drove, Pearson was in the front passenger seat and Uncle Bobby was in the back.
They got to motoring up the course and all of a sudden Uncle Bobby puts his hands over Parnelli's eyes, Parnelli starts screaming and goes over the side of the course.
Here's the punch line: Being that he knew every cubic centimeter of that course and could drive it blindfolded, Uncle Bobby knew that there was an access road next to that spot on the course, so the car only dropped a few feet before it landed and was in no danger of going off the mountain.
Pearson still about crapped his pants and supposedly chased Uncle Bobby all over the place wanting to kill him

Hard to beat in a best name for race driver competition.
Started out as a Cale fan in my youth. The Holly Farms cars were awesome as were the Hardee's Montes. Went to Earnhardt when Cale went over to Ford in the mid 80s.
Kimi probably my fav in F1 as his personality is much like mine.

Another Uncle Bobby story, again he told it himself on a podcast … Al Sr. missed Indy in 1969 because he was horsing around on a motorcycle in Gasoline Alley and fell off and broke his leg. He was in the hospital at Indy. Uncle Bobby hired some girl to go into Al’s hospital room and, to put it delicately, start servicing him orally. But when she knocked on the door and went in … Mom Unser was sitting there at Al’s bedside.
Today’s drivers are basically boring IMO …

In F1 I always rooted for the gentlemen over the psychopaths, and the underdog #2 drivers who could win races but were no match for their dominant teammate (the Barrichello/Webber types).
F1: Damon Hill, Mika Häkkinen
IndyCar: Alex Zanardi
AMA: Miguel DuHamel (Smokin' Joe's !), Scott Russell (Mr. Daytona)
World Superbike: Colin Edwards, Noriyuki Haga
500cc GP: Mick Doohan
I learned so much about racing, and tires, from watching and listening to motorcycle racers.

Darrell Waltrip
Don The Snake Prudhomme
Clint Bowyer
First two were the first two drivers that got me interested in motor sports in general. Bowyer and me were both born in the same town and we grew up about 15 miles apart from each other.

I lean to the US drivers. Showing my age:
* Phil Hill - 1st US F1 Champ
* Mario Andretti- know mostly for his Indy campaigns, he was the 2nd F1 US Champ.
* Sterling Moss - F1 - he was something to behold when the rain started. To this day, none better on a wet race track.
* George Follmer - in ‘72, Penske called him to drive the CanAm 917 after Mark Donohue crashed. The car was a beast that few could really drive. Arrived on a Thursday & won the Road Atlanta race that weekend. Maybe the most aggressive driver ever. He won the CanAm Championship that year. An underrated great.

I forgot to mention Jerry. Jerry was a race car driver, he drove so goddamn fast. He never did win no checkered flags, but he never did come in last.

Dan Gurney teamed with Brock Yates to win the first Cannonball Run.
Huge cool points there.
