Where are all the great CFB coaches?

I could be totally wrong, but I feel like 2-3 decades ago there were several great coaches across the CFB landscape. I realize ‘great’ is a vague word, but I would equate that to coaches with national titles that are still competing at or near that level, and some sure fire guys at lower level programs.
Right now, I’d say that list includes Saban, Dabo, Day (for now anyway), Kirby (I guess), Lincoln Riley, Kelly, and then on to guys like Matt Campbell, Cristobal, etc.
The well just seems a bit dry. Maybe it has to do with the evolution of the game.
In the year 2006, you had guys like Urban Meyer, Lloyd Carr, Tressel, Carroll, Mack Brown, Stoops, Bowden (falling off his game), Les (trending upward obviously), Spurrier, JoePa (coming off a big season), maybe Richt.
Go back even further to 1998 or so…Fulmer, Spurrier, Bowden, Butch Davis, Snyder, Solich, Holtz, Carr, Jon Cooper (couldn’t win the big one but OSU was still a top team), Paterno, Barry Alvarez, maybe Mack and RC at that point.
You also have guys who maxed out what a program could do, like Gary Patterson, Mike Bellotti, Dennis Erickson, George O’Leary, etc.
I’m wondering where all those guys are now. Chip Kelly may very well get this UCLA thing on track. Is Kiffin entering the conversation now? It seems like you have maybe 2-3 coaches worth a crap out West, maybe 2 in the Big 12. Am I just openly shitting on guys like Mullen, Cryst, Franklin, Ferentz?

One hobbit to rule them all.

Saban has choked out all of college football.

Yeah you are shitting on Ferentz. He’s building a GOAT Iowa coaching resume
Ed O won a national title that could have been used to build a good coach’s resume

You also had loyalty and stability with one university. In today’s fast paced world is what have you done for me lately more than ever.
Wins mattered 25-30 years ago but longevity was also revered by recruits looking to play for an esteemed coach.
Now in today’s digital/social media world it seems to be all about the next hot name.

BCS and playoffs killed them off. So many schools now are championship or bust. I remember being pumped to watch bowls like the citrus bowl in the 90's with really good teams. These days it seems like no one cares about those bowls because their team didn't make the playoff, and so it's a "disappointing season". Guys like Mullen, Ferentz and franklin would have been considered with some of the 90's names you mentioned as great coaches. They can't make the playoff these days so they're hot seat guys.

In the past 70 years Iowa has had 3 good coaches and 4 really bad ones, but those 4 all came in a row.
Forest Evashevski (1952–1960) 65.1%
Hayden Fry (1979–1998) 61.3%
Kirk Ferentz (1999–present) 61.5%
Jerry Burns (1961–1965) 37%
Ray Nagel (1966–1970) 33%
Frank Lauterbur (1971–1973) 13%
Bob Commings (1974–1978) 31%

i dont really feel like going through all of it, but im not sure how the current list is really any different than the others you listed?
mark stoops, pat fitzgerald, matt campbell, jamey chadwell, tom allen are all currently maxing out their programs.
you didnt even mention jimbo and luke fickell. i know im missing some more, too.
im just not seeing any difference

I see you’ve never coached HS football. Not in Louisiana, anyway.

You have a point. I did forget Jimbo. The only one you listed that I would hold off on is Tom Allen. Let’s see if they can sustain some success.
Going back to prior eras, I left off guys like Gary Barnett and Beamer.
I think that some posters have nailed it. That championship or bust expectations correlate to the definition of success, and that’s heaped upon coaches.
I also think that with more parity (again, something we saw in past decades), you see more great teams capable of winning it all, and thus, more great coaches.
I suppose there will always be the same number of wins and losses each year, distributed amongst the coaches in a similar way to last decades. My perception of great coaches has just changed in number.

Yeah, I can’t agree with this. There’s less media BS, but that’s about it. You’re still dealing with entitled kids and parents, even more logistical issues. I can guarantee you, Saban isn’t going to drive the team bus any time soon.

Schools are quick to fire and coaches are quick to leave...
It's that simple.

Saban dominating to such an extent for a long period means there aren’t that many championships left over.
Also, coaches get fired more easily now, so not many get a chance to build up a long resume at a big program.

I think there are a good chunk of coaches that are making names for themselves, it's just that Saban's accomplishments have diminished what used to be regarded as big milestones for coaches in the past. The bar for "great" coaches was much much lower before Saban.

Pretty incredible that Iowa has had two coaches in 40+ years, both of which were 20 year guys.
Posted on 9/15/21 at 3:55 pm to TexasTiger08
The great coaches of the past would've been fired in today's CFB. No one is given time to have rebuilding years. If you have a bad year, the fanbase wants you fired. It's boom or bust now.

Exactly. Tom Osborne won 9-10 games from 22 years before winning a championship. Now, there are actual movements to fire both Jim Harbaugh and Dan Mullen who are winning 9-10 games a year. Saban has completely warped AD's (and fans') frame of reference
