When will college football realize they don’t need to give up their stars after 3-4 years?

NIL is a placeholder until colleges start paying players directly

Once that happens, players will be employees of the school, not necessarily students

They would remain such until their services are no longer needed; no different than a professor or custodian

The NFL would have more TV money to win bidding wars for players, but some CFB powers (ND, Texas, A&M, Bama, etc) have massive war chests to help make up the difference

Could Bama have won an open bidding war with the Dolphins for Tua in 2020? Interesting to ponder

The 5 years to play 4 thing could seem archaic very soon

Some of you can come up with some serious nonsense. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be inside some posters minds for a day.

It's a very valid question. The NCAA allowing players to only play four years was as arbitrary as sitting out for a year if you transfer or not being able to get paid for signing autographs. Those changes may have been unthinkable as well but now college kids are making millions and there is open free agency every summer.

As soon as someone makes the very reasonable argument that there is no reason to limit these dudes to four years other than "amateurism and college spirit" we're going to have guys playing college ball into their 30's.

Then it’s just lousy junior pro football.

It would have seemed unthinkable 10 years ago. But if you think it seems unthinkable now, you haven’t been paying attention

Because the true regulator of college football as it pertains to this is the NFL. NFL wants eligibility rules then they get word out and the courts, then the NCAA fall in line. Money talks and the NFL can crush college football in that aspect, even the so called "big boys".

It’s not nonsense. CFB players don’t need the ACT to get into school, barely go to any real class (many are doing virtual options), and are getting paid. Once that money is a contractual obligation from the institution, it would behoove the school to hang onto their star players rather than let them be outbid by the NFL.

This is absolutely going to be a topic of discussion in the next 5-10 years.

Why would schools do this? Especially with Title 9?

Players would also just get NIL on top of those salaries

That's what it's been for the last 30 years at least. OP has a point. The NCAA will be told to go frick itself soon. Why not ditch the concept of a student-athlete outright. It's been a facade for years anyway.

College Football (at least at the D1 level) could split from the NCAA and form their own league. It's not going to happen, but it could happen.

The college presidents will blow the whole thing up rather than let this happen, what fans might want is completely irrelevant.

The NFL if it were so inclined … and it isn’t … could crush college football in so many ways that blinded college football fans can’t even contemplate.

That is step too far I believe. The curriculum for just about all college undergrad degrees is based on a four year time frame and I don't ever see non-students playing college football. I guess you could make the argument anyone can attend college for as long as they like at any age, but I just don't see 4-5 years of eligibility changing. I mean, as egregious as NIL may be, the school itself is not funding any of it.
