When do college sports allow unlimited eligibility and not require classes?

With college sports turning into the Wild West at what point do we become totally disconnected from the student athlete concept and college teams essentially become professional teams with the college brand?

The fan loyalty and brand values of the top college teams are too valuable to give up now but with the education component reaching a complete farce, why not just abandon it completely?

We ain’t come here to play school.

Agreed. There is no need to park barely literate athletes in communications 101 or kinesiology classes anymore.

They won’t do that because the NFL would argue it is not an amateur league anymore and start putting games on Saturday to crush what they’d see as a competitor at that point

That hasn't really been the case for quite some time. % of illiterates is much smaller than 30 years ago.

Why not give them a degree in what they are interested in? I think Tressel and Aikman had a conversation about this years ago. Give them classes in nutrition, contract negotiations, coaching psychology, muscle development, media presentation, etc.

There’s only so many NFL games… they can’t afford to take any more off of Sundays

Most won’t ever “graduate” to the pros to actually use this. Unless they’re interested in the civilian side of sports and not the athlete side.

Fair. But why not offer classes that would be helpful? A school may actually retain some athletes if the classes are relevant. If it is truly just a place to play football - they can get that anywhere.

All of these are degree programs, pretty much.

These responses miss the interesting question. How long before “5 years to play 4” or whatever it is goes away?

I don’t see how the NCAA can force early retirement of these valued employees.

Because college athletics don't exist anymore. It's all professional athletics now.

What? They absolutely can. In fact, they do towards the end of the season once the CFB regular season is over.

You do know Notre Dame's football team didn't go to class in 1920s because most weren't even enrolled. So I'd say that ship sailed a long time ago.

Yes they do once CFB is over… but if networks are paying billions for CFB rights on Saturday and billions for NFL on Sunday, they don’t want either day being cannibalized

Lol what? There can be like 6 games on at 4pmET and they will only show 1 game on FOX and CBS will be playing infomercials instead of another game

end of the day Schools co trol their athletic programs and aren’t just letting them launch off.

The NFL and College football work because they don’t compete with eachother.

The NFL doesn’t take high school kids and colleges don’t try and pay students 20 million to play college football forever

further colleges are part of what makes the brand the brand for 90% of schools

You should be able to MAJOR in football. Or, at least Sports.

There are dance majors. Music Performance Majors. Art Majors. What would make majoring in Sports substantially different?
