The other night I was sitting at a bar and a guy wearing a Bama shirt and a Southern mask walked in. It’s far from the first time I’ve noticed something like this. You see it all the time on social media when people that attend[ed] SU post comments rooting for Bama and talking shite about LSU. What gives? Pretty much all LSU fans I know, although not invested in Southern athletics, at least like to see them do well. #TogetherBR, right? Does anybody have an answer to this mystery? Are there any SU Bama “fans” here that want to chime in? I’ll hang up and listen.

For many decades, even after officially desegregating, LSU was perceived as the “white” school and discrimination against potential African American students and professors was absolutely a thing. In addition, Southern always felt a great deal of envy at LSU’s resources allocated to it while SU’s facilities crumbled. As a result, there’s an older generation in BR that still holds on to a hatred of LSU. As a result, many of them became fans of Alabama because Alabama was the team Charlie Mac couldn’t beat.

Those same southern fans were wearing USC gear in the early 2000’s and Miami or FSU gear in the 80’s & 90’s

They are bandwagoners to the highest degree

This board's obsession with Southern rages on.

Southern played here in 2019 and brought about five thousand fans. Drank with quite a few of them after the game at a few bars around town.

How many times was Alabama mentioned or repped? Zero point zero.

sounds like they like winners

Not everyone lives in the reality we do. If you grew up poor in the 90s, you certainly didn’t feel affinity to the LSU losers of the early 90s, or of the Saints losers later that decade, or of the Pelicans losing now

Someone needs to do research on why brothers are such bandwagon fans.

If you’re driving around BR and you see a car drive by with Cowboys or Steelers car flags it’s 100% going to be a black guy.

it's this, what kingbob said, and just general trolling of white/LSU fans

there was an older black guy who used to play poker a bunch in LC who would show up on the weekends decked out in crimson and talk shite about Bama. the only problem was 90% of the people playing poker were from Texas and did not give a frick about LSU and it would frustrate the guy so much it was hilarious

They attend/attended SU, one of the most poorly ranked schools in a state that ranks last nationally in education. What do you expect?
