It’s all about money and short term thinking now, damn the torpedoes. You can apply that to most things in society nowadays.

the same thing that's happened to every other aspect of college football lately- whatever ends up making the people in charge the most money.

If that somehow miraculously involved being played at 5am on a Wednesday between the MAC and Big Sky then that's what would happen.

Way less than 1% of them.

The question was about 20-year-old millionaires 20 years ago vs now. I guarantee the difference is more than 1%.

What appeal is it losing? The rose bowl held college football back for years.

Talking about CFB in general not the Rose Bowl specifically.

And how did it hold CFB back? It PRESERVED college football and its traditions and uniqueness.

But you're getting your wish now...NFL D-League, NIL, NFL-style 8-12 team playoff coming soon...NFC (SEC) vs AFC (Big10)...everyone gets paid, regular season don't matter, all the big boys will make the playoffs, NHL-style.

Rose Bowl didn't ruin anything.. The obsession to crown "A true champion" at all costs (which is antithetical to CFB's heritage and purpose) ruined CFB along with the NIL, Corporate greed, transfer portal (NFL has more restrictions on players jumping ship to ship.)

Its a mess. Maybe the Rose Bowl saw the writing on the wall and for years took a stand as the last good thing we had that reminded us why CFB used to be unique.

Now it's just a garbage minor league, all the traditions have been shuttered for TV greed and Corporate sponsors (which is all the so-called "playoffs" are all about.)

So enjoy your new generic NFL-lite, sponsored by Dr. Pepper and root for your favorite new transfer before he transfers again for more money.

or is it now? Can you tell the difference?

Kudos to you and your "traditions" I guess if you'd rather see #1 Pac 12 champ USC play against 10-2 Michigan in the rose bowl, while #2 Alabama plays 9-3 Kansas State in the Sugar bowl. And then letting random voters pick on who the "national champion" is between Bama and USC.

Anybody who says they wouldn't want to see Alabama vs USC in this scenario is nuts. This is what the rose bowl prevented for years.

So you'd rather voters crowning national titles than what we have now?

The reason you think the rose bowl is such a big deal is because they tell you on tv that it's the granddaddy of them all. And they have a parade you can watch. Know what I think would be better than any other tradition that there is? A CFB playoff game where Michigan comes to Baton Rouge to play a game against LSU. Screw the rose bowl, that's what I want to watch.

I mean that would be cool but how do you decide the Big10 champion AFTER New Years? Los Angeles ain't holding the Rose Parade on Dec. 2nd.

Tournament of Roses will be pissed, but it is what it is.

They will host a playoff spot too. But the opportunity will be in place to have the "classic" Rose Bowl- USC vs Michigan, for example. They will get to call it something like that, and it will exist outside of the playoffs; which is a better fate than what awaits the Sugar.

Think of it- the Sugar is now gone. It will become a playoff host, but the ties with the SEC will be lost. The SEC Championship is in Atlanta now.

The Rose Bowl committee will be able to continue, they will simply have to adjust some dates. Simple answer will be to open with the game, stretch things out, and the parade will stay New Years Day.

And funnily enough some of the best Rose Bowls were ones that didn't have the traditional Big 10 vs Pac 8/10/12 matchup in Texas vs USC and UGA vs OU. Just makes you wonder how many other great matchups there could have been that was prevented from happening.

You make some very valid points, but I disagree with a few others.

The BCS championship game was actually good for college football in creating a 1 vs 2 game. It had a big, but not insurmountable, problem in 2003 when they selected Oklahoma over USC to play in the title game.

The initial death blow to college football was struck on December 4, 2011. Despite being told “every game counts” suddenly, when the media jihad decided it didn’t, it didn’t. What made college football unique and great - that the regular season mattered more than any other sport - was gone.

But now we have a tournament where a 9-3 fourth place team in the SEC can be the “national champion”. I’m not excited.

The Rose Bowl will be a playoff game every year. It ain’t going nowhere. The #1 team will have first pick. If the Rose Bowl is a quarterfinal game and USC is #1, they’ll take the Rose Bowl.

Counterpoint-

If USC, Alabama and Oklahoma all finished undefeated and won their respective bowls, all three fanbases are happy, and there's a lot of shite-talking in the offseason and next year. And a desire to see each other on schedules soon, while the teams are still strong. Both by the programs, who want to settle it on the field, and the networks, who want to show that game.

As for me (an LSU fan), I don't really care that much about the above teams, and who is ranked where... other than the fact that I don't want an anti-SEC bias, because that would affect my team when it has a good year.

With a playoff, you now have USC fans pissed at losing in the finals, and Oklahoma fans upset they lost in the semi's. You have 1 group happy, instead of several.

Lots of good points in this thread

And aside from the NC, the non-natty BCS bowls really were a big deal. They were fun. I miss them as much as anything else from the before times.

This, together with the breakup of the old Big XII the same year really was. Also the same year the Sandusky scandal broke. Definitely a year that changed cfb permanently.

No one cares about the Rose Bowl aside from Cali and Big 10 people.

I dont even watch it.

It’s just another bowl game, and historically it usually involves teams i have zero interest in watching.
