As suspected, the playoffs ended that.

The BCS era is going to go down as the apex of the sport.

It still had almost all of the regional charm but was able to harness that at a national level before a lot of the regionalism started to unravel.

Ironic that the BCS era is getting so much love now, when it was almost universally hated back then.

The music is what made it

New Years, nighttime, BCS/ABC theme

Now every game is led in by yo yo yo crap or that’s my kind of night

Agreed, 2000’s BCS was the peak. When WVU won the 2006 Sugar Bowl I was over the moon. Winning a BCS bowl made you feel great and capped off a good season. Even if you didn’t win the national title you won a top tier game.

I think 80’s- mid 90’s, when getting a bowl bid was an actual accomplishment.

Back then, six wins didn’t mean much. The smaller bowls were taking 7 win teams. I also appreciated the fact that corporations didn’t tag their name onto every bowl game. Maybe I’m old.

There were already 10 bowl games by 1971, but making a bowl was like making the CFB Playoff now.

The 1st LSU bowl game in my lifetime that didn't seem legit was the 1978 Liberty Bowl, when the Tigers were 8-3 overall and 3-3 in conference.

That was a fun week of games! A college buddy of mine was an intern for Gameday and was at the Rose Bowl. He got me a shirt from the game, I still have it somewhere. Just a a cool artifact to have from one of the great games in history.

The mid-late 90s pre bcs was the last time bowls felt like bowls. As a fan of a team that made a few bcs championship games and non championship bcs bowls, just getting to a bcs bowl felt like a consolation prize if you didnt make it to the natty. You knew it was a jv game compared to the actual national championship game.

It was all downhill once the opt-out trend began thanks to two running backs.
