No it wasn’t. It started in MLB. I don’t remember exactly who it was, but there was.....
Whit Merrifield of the Kansas City Royals was the first player I ever saw use it.
We called it the "Whit Mitt".

I’m saying it wasn’t some huge issue that needed addressing
Players don't always get hit in the nuts either, but some choose to wear a cup.

The problem was there needed to be more equipment that manufacturers could sell.

Yeah, I thought about it and it's a stupid statement.
You're not talking about a Formula 1 race car or a Funny Car on a race track where fractions of a second could be the difference between winning or losing.
You're talking about a human being running bases and speed of the legs is WAY more important than the "aerodynamic" properties of a damn oven mitt.

just hold a handful of dirt if we wanted to keep a closed fist when running the bases.
I always flipped the strap of my batting gloves out and held that.

My 11 year old got my mom to buy him some X brand banana sliding mitt. The damn thing cost $85. Add that to his Bruce Bolt batting gloves. I think he wanted them just to wear it in his back pocket.

Nothing. Just like the asinine green 1st base.
Posted on 5/6/25 at 11:50 pm to Tiger1242
I’ve made at present approximately $4.3M off of them so I’d say they are very important.

I think they’re stupid for anything lower than high school. Even at the high school level it’s stupid unless the kid steals a lot.

I guess you're a pro at sliding into bases and/or never had to slide head first... plus it only takes on time to end a players season from a slide.
Bottom line, you aren't the player... those things shouldn't bother you.

The dumbest thing is little leaguers wearing them in a league where you can't slide head first.

couple things
1) if playing on dirt, protects the hand from spikes. If you have ever seen this happen...you would understand why they are a good thing
2) protects the fingers from jamming and from getting stepped on
and overall who gives a shite what a bunch of old dumbasses think? yall complain about everything and hate anything remotely cool and say...i didnt have that growing up...like anyone gives a shite
so tired of old people complaining about this accessory or that accessory.
Does it hurt anything? no
could it help with somethings? yes
do kids want to be like the pros and emulate the pros? yes
so who cares if the 8u kid wants to wear it? You didnt spend the money on it and it doesnt affect you in any way, stop bitching.

But I will NEVER defend that retarded looking shite.
i dont think it looks retarded though
my kids doesnt even use them but i just think its stupid as old guys to try and judge what we think is cool and force those views onto young kids. I also think its dumb AF for bunch of old guys to get their panties in a wad everytime something changes from when they played.
my older kid does wear a ankle guard because he fouled a couple off and it has helped. he doesnt wear the elbow guard we got him and has been hit 3 times this year in the elbow but he says it messes with his swing because its uncomforable
he has a sliding mitt but hates them because he likes to feel the bag. he steals a ton and pitches so i wish he would wear it and he actually jammed his fingers earlier in the year
i get people not liking them in little league cause you cant slide head first but in the end the whole goal is to keep as many kid playing and exercising as possible. If letting them use a sliding mitt makes it more fun and keeps them playing than what is it hurting?

Leaning into a pitch is an auto out... right?
No.
If you get HBP from a ball in the strike zone it is just a strike. If you get hit outside the strike zone but you do not attempt to move away, it is just a ball.
The amount of times an ump has ruled a player didn't try to get out of the way is practically none. The amount of times a strike has been called after batter was hit in the strike zone is.....maybe zero? I have personally never seen it or heard of it happening in MLB.

I jammed my fingers all of the time in H.S. and Legion ball. I always had to run with gloves in my hand because of it.
I did the same.

Nobody calls TO to put on a sliding mitt. They put it on standing at first while the next batter walks to the box.

I wish the rule would be whatever you wear to bat, you have to keep with you while running the bases.
Having to call time to switch out 80% of your equipment after every hit seems silly to me.
NFHS is actually considering implementing this rule. Not sure it'll pass, but I'm all for it.

So these stupid arse oven mitts started popping it and as with everything that’s trendy, this useless piece of garbage was being used from MLB down to 9 year olds.
So little Johnny, you don’t run the bases fast enough to cause enough force on your finger to break it when you slide into a bag to justify wearing that idiotic fricking things.
As much as this board hates tourney ball, I’ll defend it. 98% of it is harmless and it’s just something fat parents of kids that aren’t very good like to come here and whine about. But I will NEVER defend that retarded looking shite.
You might be right, you might be wrong, but there is absolutely ZERO reason for you to be this upset about sliding mitts
Good lord
