That’s no different than than any other place. Success breeds support at any school.

FSU has a huge advantage over most other programs because of its success over the last 40 years, and it is located in the middle of some of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country.

They shouldn’t be lacking support because of one bad coaching hire that lasted only 2 seasons. The expansion and upgrades of their facilities are 20 years behind other schools.

There’s a reason it took them nearly a year to hire an Athletic Director. Even then, they had to settle on the Interim AD because all other decent candidates didn’t want the job. FSU should be a premiere job for potential ADs, but it’s a mess behind the scenes. There are major flaws in the structure and relationships between the Athletic Dept, the university, and boosters.

They have the reputation and recruiting to bounce back quickly, but they need to overhaul their Athletic Department and facilities, otherwise they are unnecessarily handicapping themselves.

So 1.5 seasons is enough to rebuild a program?

It was clear after 1.5 games he couldn't build a doghouse

What did he do at USF then? I know everyone wants a quick turnaround on that situation, but those are hard to come by. Bill Snyder or Frank Beamer would've been canned before they could get things rolling if they had been coaching in this era

I’ll be the first person to admit we’re mediocre and we aren’t a power. LSU Florida Bama etc have gone through plenty of lean times and never seen their program just torpedo like he’s describing. I dunno it seems like blaming it on a coach is a little short sighted

Some people that helped Willie at USF and Oregon didn't follow him to Tally. Willie was a mess on and off the field. He was doomed to fail because he had no plan and was completely disorganized. The administration knew it and couldn't let it go on

So you don't think a coach should ever get fired then?

I agree, seems like a convergence of coaching, trends and underlying problems. Maybe Florida being full of transplants without deep roots to the area is part of it: look at Nebraska, they've been mediocre for a long time and everyone there is still going to games and financially they're fine

I was shocked when some guys on an FSU podcast said Lincoln has 500k more people within 3 hrs than Tally does. That and FSU being young compared to other schools will always be a disadvantage

That is crazy, but I do remember thinking the panhandle looked like a dead wasteland from I-10

At some point down the road FSU and lots of other programs should take seating out.
Why?

Of course I do. But you’re blaming your entire program’s economic downfall on one bad coach. Every powerhouse program has had bad coaches and your fans are acting like it’s the end of the world

Your fanbase sucks. There’s nothing wrong with that really, just admit it and stop blaming your economic shortcomings on a bad coach

Technology will only make it easier for fans to stay home to watch games in the future. Schools should focus on all the bells and whistles to entice fans to come to games.

FSU has been co-ed since 1947. That excuse worked in 1970. In 2020 it's completely bunk.

It wasn't all his fault, but he played a large part in it. For the highly ranked classes he had they did an awful job recruiting at ol, qb and lb after 2013. Academics and discipline went in the toilet his last 3 years. I have no clue why he kept Rick Trickett on staff and got Charles Kelly a raise.

It's young compared to the schools it competes against. FSU doesn't have old money like most other schools do

I live an hour west of Tally and the interior is pretty much rural between Tally and Pcola
