I like how the Pats use "New England" instead of Boston.

But they're technically in Foxboro.

The Houston Oilers is up there (albeit a defunct name).

I'll never forget the Associated Press' lead for its story on Baltimore getting the Ravens:

"Quoth the Ravens: Baltimore."

A lot of teams aren't in the city they represent. Technically, the buffalo bills are New York's only NFL team.

Dumb question, did the Ravens get their nickname from Edgar Allen Poe's famous story?

I always assumed so.

Detroit Pistons
Milwaukee Brewers
New York Knickerbockers
San Diego Padres
Pittsburgh Steelers
Washington Capitals
Ottawa Senators
Montreal Canadiens

Names that have a tie to a city based on history, geography, or industry are the best.

The rare occasion that the name worked even better after the franchise relocated. Originally the San Diego Rockets.
