I like names that are unusual and represent something about the city. A lot of the best examples have already been named:

NFL:
New Orleans Saints
Baltimore Ravens
Pittsburgh Steelers
SF 49ers
Houston Oilers

NBA
Detroit Pistons
Boston Celtics
Philly 76ers
Charlotte Hornets

MLB
Milwaukee Brewers
Minnesota Twins

Teams should stop using bulldogs, eagles, tigers, etc. unless there is some really good reason.

And I also really dislike geographically inappropriate nicknames like the Utah Jazz, LA Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies, etc.

I think we're through the looking glass with the NBA. There's something enjoyable about the irony and silliness of basketball names. Hopefully the NBA expands to Newark with the New Jersey Floridians.

Pels done fricked up passing up on the "Rougarou." They would have been the best.

Agree with the Seattle Supersonics, and their great uni's. Shame they're no longer here.

great posts.

half are facetious regarding names that were stolen when the team was moved.

L.A. Lakers
It was the Minnesota Lakers, in the land of 10,000 lakes.

I like how the Pats use "New England" instead of Boston.

"Rebels" would be neat & unique for a pro team. I can't think of anyone else besides Ole Miss with Rebels.

I really like the Houston Astros and Rockets with the ties to space and NASA. I just wish the Texans were something spacey instead of Texans. Maybe Apollos or something.
