There are some startling bad takes in this thread. Perhaps none worse than Lincecum. He is one of only two pitchers in MLB history to win multiple World Series Championships, win multiple Cy Young Awards, throw multiple no hitters and be elected to multiple All Star games. The other is Sandy Koufax. I suppose one could say that his career derailed after an injury 9 years later, but jeez, derailed badly?

Tim Lincecum is a perfect person for this thread. Dude was on a HOF trajectory all the way after winning the CY in his first two season and getting votes the next two... then... just wasn't effective anymore. He started walking more batters, striking out less batters, giving up more hits... he led the leage in ER allowed the following season.

Derailed badly might be a stretch, but definitely derailed and then out of the league at 32.

Here’s the whole post people are refusing to read and not comprehending that there’s more than one man that played baseball with that name

are you stupid? After starting his career off with 4 consecutive all star game appearances his ERA the next 4 year would be:

5.18
4.37
4.74
4.13

Will Clark, Dale Murphy, and Don Mattingly have been mentioned.

None of these 3 ‘derailed badly’ and all 3 of them are Hall of Fame worthy IMHO.

Agreed. I did a double take when I saw Clark and Mattingly's names tossed around.

I'm not sure either ever ends up making the HoF, and I could argue either way with both of them, but to say their careers derailed is laughable.

One thing I didn't realize is just how strikingly similar their numbers were. Only real difference is in Gold Gloves, where Mattingly had 9 to Clark's 1. Other than that they're very similar.

Seasons
Mattingly - 14
Clark - 15

BA
Mattingly - .307
Clark - .303

Hits
Mattingly - 2,153
Clark - 2,176

HR
Mattingly - 222
Clark - 284

RBI
Mattingly - 1,099
Clark - 1,205

All Star teams
Mattingly - 6
Clark - 6

Silver Slugger
Mattingly - 3
Clark - 2

OBP
Mattingly - .354
Clark - .383

Mauer had three consecutive seasons with 30+ HRs then it seemed like he just disappeared as quickly as he came on.

Mauer had a great career, he just stopped hitting home runs and he played on bad teams that got no national attention.

Mauer never had even one 30 HR season (high of 28 in 2009 and never approached 20 HR a season in any other season). He hit for a high average, which is a plus for a catcher, but when he stopped catching, he became a first baseman/DH with no power kept on the roster only because he was a hometown boy.

Man not even getting into modern analytics, how fricking nuts is it to hit .306 and have a .347 OBP. He slugged .543 in 1989 and only drew 43 walks in a full 162 game season. Mike Trout has 8 walks in 6 games

texas high school phenom.
last name David

pitched no hitter first mlb game. did not finish the season. blew arm out

You’re talking about David Clyde and he never threw a no hitter in his first game. Rangers brought him up right out of high school for attention and publicity and they ruined him.

Dale Murphy and Mattingly have good chances to get in at some point with the Veterans committee. I think there are less deserving players already in from that era.

I'll disagree on Lofton because the dude was 27 during his best season and 4 years into the league...

Andruw Jones had 368 home runs by the end of his age 30 season (and the last season in Atlanta). I remember being a kid and thinking this dude would challenge Hank Aaron

He had 61.0 WAR at that point as well. Finished his career at 62.7.

He was easily on track for a first ballot hall of fame career. Leaving Atlanta and toiling away in LA, NY, etc killed those chances. He should still be in, IMO but it's a long shot at this point.

Can we add Madison Bumgarner to this list yet? Since 2016 dude has been trending downward and through 2 starts already this season he has allowed 11 runs through 9 innings. Coming off a 6.48 ERA last season
