Wonder why there's a difference in balls

Duke women's basketball coach Kara Lawson said the teams played with a men's basketball for the first half of a loss to Florida State on Sunday.
The 16th-ranked Blue Devils lost to the Seminoles 70-57 in Tallahassee, Florida -- the team's second ACC loss of the season.
After her team beat Pittsburgh 53-44 on Thursday, Lawson ended her news conference by speaking animatedly about Sunday's game.

"This would never happen in a men's game. This would never happen," she said. "It's embarrassing for our sport."
The circumference of a women's ball is about an inch smaller than a men's ball, and it is typically 2 ounces lighter. While it might not seem like a lot, that's a big difference.

If its the same sport and they should be paid the same why is there a different ball?

Yeah, it is pretty embarrassing for the sport when it takes a full half a game for two entire basketball teams, plus all the coaches, support staffs, and referees for those teams, to figure out the ball is bigger and heavier than usual.

Immediately blaming men is so toxic
Doubt a single man handled that ball in the 1st half. Blame the women for being incompetent

It actually did happen for a men's game, Illinois vs Oakland in 2010.

Maybe the ball is transitioning.

You know why?
B/c men aren't idiots and they would have noticed that it was the wrong ball immediately. They notice when the rim is off by 1/2", you think they won't notice the ball was significantly smaller? Even i can tell that immediately.
Not recognizing it until halftime makes you and everyone involved look very stupid.

My kid uses a girls basketball and the difference is easy to notice if you play often. I’m not sure how they made it an entire half. Especially at the free throw line when action is stopped.

Then all the players are idiots. It shouldn't have been an issue after the first possession.

Counter point: deflategate

bad counter point because in deflategate they used the same balls and people did notice they were under-inflated..

Counter point: The other team would rarely ever touch the ball to know it was slightly deflated. They don't share balls.

Counter counter counter point: the refs touch the balls the most and didn’t notice in either the WBB or NFL games

That's actually pretty funny.

Exactly, how could college players not notice the difference? I could tell the difference in high school.

counter counter counter counter point: The refs are old dudes with thick gloves on freezing their asses off. They aren't strong enough (except Hochuli) or have enough feeling in their fingers to tell.

This wouldn't be the first time this has happened in women's basketball. In 2017, the College of Charleston played home games and practiced with men's balls for most of its season until the error was discovered.
You can play nearly an entire season and not notice? Then it is meaningless
