As has been said in the thread, Barry is hard to evaluate when his runs would go something like 1, -2, 3, 55. Was that because of a bad line or just the way he ran? I don't know.

The lack of respect for Emmitt Smith goes back to most of these posters being Aints fans and their blind hatred for Dallas! I am not saying Emmitt was the best RB ever but he was one of the best all-around RBs in NFL history. Go back and watch his highlight runs! Aints fans act like he just fell forward every run because of the "great" oline he played behind. FYI...Emmitt Smith had 4 rushing titles back when it meant something and of all those "GREAT" olinemen that made all those so called easy runs for him, how many are in the NFL Hall of Fame? ONE in Larry Allen and Emmitt already had THREE rushing titles by the time Allen arrived in 1994. Emmitt was running behind a bunch of free agents and late draft picks. Smith deserves respect for what HE DID on the field as one of the best ever!

Answer to op:
No

Our all time rb should be able to get 3 1/2 tough yards with game on line to keep drive alive as well as hit for 35 yd td off tackle.

So brown, oj, payton, smith.
Sanders can be your slot back receiver on the all time roster. Open field killer.
Re those 3 1/2 tough yards: i nominate franco harris for all time fb. Smith right there.

Emmitt was a fricking tank with OUTSTANDING vision and he was built like a chunk of iron.

IIRC, he ran for nearly 200 yards with a dislocated shoulder against the Giants in the Meadowlands in the season finale in '92 or '93 to win the NFC East.

From 1991 to 1995, Emmitt averaged 357 carries, 1603 yards rushing, 17 rushing touchdowns and 55 receptions per year. He was a fricking monster anyway you slice it

Emmitt was great, no doubt. I think a lot of people recognize that his greatness was helped by the fact he played for awesome teams, stayed healthy and lasted longer than most RBs.

That's not meant to diminish what he did. But I think he's being judged fairly if he's not mentioned in the same breath as Brown, Sanders and Payton.

Had Tom Landry given Tony Dorsett more carries he would have had multiple rushing titles and had a few thousand more yards rushing. He is the prettiest runner in NFL history from what I saw that had an amazing change of direction and balance. Great receiver as well.

Barry Sanders had a very good oline in Detroit people with 2 Pro Bowl linemen during most of hia time there.

Pretty sure it was '93. If it was the same game, I think he even stiff-armed LT with the dislocated shoulder that day. His vision was unreal.

Jim Brown also played against 195 lb white defenses.

Certainly. He never really had a threatening passing game to open things up though. Herman Moore was a great target for a while and Erik Kramer was solid the year they made the NFC CG, but the offense was usually trash if Barry couldn't get loose.

He doesn't have the full career of stats, but he's probably hands down the most talented and exciting running back I ever got to watch. The best was probably Walter Payton, but he retired before I really started watching football.

Sanders has the best highlight reel of probably any player ever.

He also got tackled for losses constantly by running backwards and dancing and shite. He was frequently lifted at the goal line.

Always had mixed feelings about him. Was never really worried about him when the Saints played the Lions (NO had a great defense then, granted).

That's like asking if Michael Jordan could have been the best ever if it weren't for his hiatus.

Bo Jackson took this prize in my world.

As far as "greatest" RB ever. It's either Jim Brown or Emmitt Smith. All you have to do is ask Barry Sanders whose career would he rather. There is no way he would pick his career over Smith's. That's just a fact. Smith has all the records, awards and championships. Sanders has a few highlight tapes. It's not even close really and I'm a Skins fan that hated Smith. He is the greatest though..

9th all time in rushing TDs despite playing way less games then others in the top 10

had he played 1 more season he'd be top 5

If he really gave a damn about records, do you think he would've retired when he did?

He was a season away from the breaking the all-time rushing record. It took Emmitt two more seasons than that to break it.
