Could Barry Sanders become the GOAT running back if he didn't retire?

Nope. History is always nicer to those that retire early. Never see them fall off. Like famous people that die young.

He already arguably is the best RB. Although I am of the opinion that once you pick out the top tier trying to distinguish between them is kind of pointless.

Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, maybe even Gale Sayers, Marshall Faulk and Ladanian Tomlinson are all pretty close to indistinguishable. There might be some others that belong in that group that I'm not thinking about. Sanders was maybe the most fun to watch out of those though.

ETA: Just thought about Eric Dickerson and OJ might belong to that group. I guess I will begrudgingly give Emmitt his due.

Lesean Mccoy is a very very poor mans version of what Barry could do.

Sanders is my number one back

Could have but you have to give it to Emmitt. He stuck it out.

No way Emmitt Smith should be in the same tier as Barry Sanders IMO.

Barry was the most explosive back we've seen for sure but of all the elite rb's he was also by far the most likely to throw up a 22 carries for -3 yards game in a big spot.

Emmitt could fall forward for 4 yards and he did it year in and year out much longer than most backs can. He's the best I've seen and that's coming from a 49ers fan.

I don't really think he was probably as good, or at least as impressive to watch, but if the idea of career achievement matters to you then he gets mentioned in that elite tier.

yeah, running behind the best oline for most of his career is not sticking it out. Sanders did it without a line and without a qb.

Barry is the second greatest RB of all-time behind Jim Brown.

Uh...

Most think he is.

Was there a secret meeting where people decided he wasn't anymore?

Nobody gives a shite about yards for GOAT...it's about skill.

I wasn't alive for Jim Brown and barely saw Walter Payton, but I remember Barry.

Older posters may have different opinions, but when considering the franchise and the stats, Barry was the best IMO.

Plus, Barry was the only RB I remember that made my Dad say "no way" and shake his head. It was the spin TD run against the Bears.
