St. Louis' Washington University is mourning the loss of basketball player Justin Hardy, who died on Sunday. He was 22.
"After 13 months of courageously redefining what it means to live with cancer, Justin passed peacefully early this morning, Sunday, May 29th," his father Bob Hardy announced on Twitter.
Hardy was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer in April 2021 and had been receiving treatment while competing on the school's basketball team. According to a statement from his family shared on a GoFundMe page, Hardy also graduated early from the university with a double major while undergoing treatment.

Despite having Stage 4 stomach cancer, Justin Hardy is the second-leading scorer for

"This is me living my life regardless of the circumstances. If this isn't beating it, I don't know what is."
I remember seeing his story on ESPN earlier this year. Sad situation, seems like he had about as positive of an attitude as one could have when facing stage 4 cancer.
RIP.
Cancer sucks, at any age.

That suvks. Wash U is a great school. My brother went to med school there and I used to enjoy the area around the campus.

That's too young for someone to have to go through. Life just doesn't make sense sometimes.

Yeah probably one of the better schools that the average person has no idea about.
Sad story RIP

It doesn't.
This story serves as a reminder that no matter how bad I or any of us think we have it, it could always be worse.
Loss of a job. Can be fixed by getting a job.
Separation or divorce? Counseling, reconciliation, or getting remarried.
Car accident. Repair shop.
Bad investments. Thanks Biden, but even this historically will rebound in time.
Death. This can't be undone. It's over. I can't imagine the pain his parents must be going through right now.

Cancer sucks. Kind of makes you realize a lot of the things people worry about is bullshite. Enjoy your life and don’t sweat the small stuff. You never know when this ride is going to end.

I lost one of my very close friends to Cancer on Christmas Day last year. He was 41.
I look at my life and think of the challenges, problems, and issues that are present. And I look at him and realize he is gone. He will never come back. I still have an opportunity to face my challenges and overcome my problems and issues. I may succeed or I may fail. Time will tell. But I'm here today and I still get a chance to right wrongs, apologize to the people I have hurt, and work to be a better person each and every day.
So, as bad as it can be sometimes, I am aware that it always can be worse, because it can. Appreciate the moment you have here on this earth right now and make the most of it.

I'm 30. 2 kids. They aren't little babies anymore either.
I think because I have started to realize that more and more, I think about some version of your words all the time. It's all a random draw. Walk around like we have forever, but it's all borrowed.

Such a sad thing to happen to someone so young. What an inspiration he is.

It is important to be grateful and you'll never know for sure what could pop up, but getting stomach cancer at that age is still very very rare (and likely more genetic than lifestyle unless theres something missing about his lifestyle). Don't live life paranoid and in fear but certainly be appreciative for what you've been given and these stories definitely do that.

WTF. Damn. I dont know the young man, but that freaking sucks.
Kudos to him, it did not stop him from living. He continued playing college basketball and even finihshed college.
But wow, the sheer horrible luck.
Cancer is probably one of the few things that genuinely scares me in life, simply because of how it happens so randomly to many people.

Double Major from WashU of all schools, while fighting cancer, while playing college basketball. Unbelievably impressive. His story will always be remembered.
