He was not the first African American in the majors.

I took an elective back in college: Race and Sports in America which covered all of this and I cannot remember who but they had black players playing in the late 1800's in the "major league" at the time.

Thought so.

It doesn't diminish what 42 did, but its weird that its never talked about. I guess 42 was just such a good role model and hard worker and awesome player at a very tumultuous time and during MLB's golden era.

Rickey is a tremendous player, one of the greatest ever even. But Bonds is just in another dimension.

Why?? Just because he hit a lot more HR's. Ricky is the greatest table setter of all-time and its not even close........... A rare blend of Speed ,Power, and instinct.......

Whatever else happens, can we kill off this threatened fad of referring to Jackie Robinson as "42"?

And also launch a pre-emptive strike against "The JRR"

Surely you are talking about Bobby Bonds and not his son.

Because it requires us to understand how race relations actually got worse in this country after Reconstruction. The worst race riot was probably in Tulsa around 1912 (I could be wrong on the exact date, I don't feel like looking it up). MLB was integrated and THEN became segregated. It wasn't always that way, it required a conscious decision by the people running baseball to exclude black people (this also happened at the Kentucky Derby - many of the early winning jockeys were black).

Cap Anson, outside of Hal Chase, had the single most toxic influence on baseball in the sport's history. Screw that guy.

He was a table setter. His job was to get on base and be a threat to score from any base. A decent outfielder[Just like Bonds] and drove in a suprising # of runs for being a leadoff man. Oh and BTW he was on teams that got to the WS far more than anything Bonds can even talk about......

Career OBP:

Bonds 444
Rickey 401

I love Rickey. Great player. Barry Bonds is the best player I have ever seen. He is the single greatest player of my lifetime, and there really isn't a close second.

I am not sure how old you are. BUt I think Bonds was a great player that turned into A pure HR hitter and that's all he cared about after his head grew six sizes. When he was in Pitt he was awesome........ YES I am NOT a fan of players that are link to ped's. Bonds won MVP's in a down era of hitters in the NL in the early 90's IMO....

Also, I heard he was not technically the first black guy in the majors. Heard there were others before him that were Latin American.

Black and Latin American aren't the same thing.

We will disagree on this........... If Bonds head didnn''t get so big and he did NOT ROID up and still ended up with the same stats................ He would be the BEST PLAYER to EVER play the game.I have Ruth as #1.....BUT If Bonds was clean............It would NOT be close..............
