Champ was great… but Deion different… made cornerback into a glamorous position… the demeanor you look for in a DB in high school and college Deion responsible for… the #21 in football will always be special

Not sure what the downvotes are for, Deion is what every shutdown corner wants to be growing up and they all get taught they can’t get away with not tackling anymore anyway. Deion changed the game and made his number as important as Jordan’s.

One was a zone corner and safety who played 3-4 more years than the other who was a straight man corner that mostly had zero help. Most of Woodsons big numbers came as a safety not a corner. 33 of his 71 INTs and 7 of his 12 returned picks for TDs came as a safety not as a corner.

No, Baily was great in the NFL and at Georgia, but Deion was the best cover corner I ever saw play. The crazy thing was he made it look easy. Could stay with any WR in the league.

When he made an INT, the play wasn't over. He returned nine of his 53 INTs for TDs. He returned one fumble recovery for a TD. He also returned six punts for TDs & three KOs for TDs. Caught three passes for TDs & had one run from scrimmage for a TD. Not many defensive guys had that many TD's.

Champ had eight TDs total.

Nnamdi Asomugha, for four years straight, averaged less than one reception allowed per game

Fair enough. How about the first 12 seasons, where Woodson played CB primarily..

Sanders
163 games, 48ints-8tds, 13frs-1tds, 1sk, 474tkls
7pbs, 1DPOY

Woodson
164 games, 47ints-5tds, 22frs-1tds, 13.5sk, 807tkls
7pbs, 1DPOY

I think that Woodson still has the edge..

Sanders was the most physically gifted DB of all time. If he actually cared about playing real football he could be number 1. The greatest ever was Mel Blount followed by Night Train Lane.

Using stats like sacks and tackles for a corner is again ignoring scheme and position. A perfect example is Charles Woodson who went from a shutdown corner in Oakland to Jack of all trades in a zone scheme at G.B. Even though he’d lost a step and wasn’t as good of a shutdown corner his stat line was better as a Packer. Other posters in the thread have pointed this out but it’s not uncommon for less numbers to mean your corner is playing a lot better when he’s playing man to man all over the field and eliminating the opponents best receiving option. Go back and watch those old Steelers games, Carnell Lake is on the #1 WR for their opponents just as much as Woodson was.

Prime was really special in 1994 when the 49ers loaded up to beat Dallas after losing to them twice in the NFCCG. He was playing for a ring (which he got) and a fat contract from somebody the next year (which he got) and was a little more focused, I think.

How you people can crown a player as the goat of a defensive position that was literally scared to tackle for his entire career is beyond me. He was a selfish diva that only played the parts of the position that served him. You have to tackle period

You think? Those stats tell the story. Deion was a great but he was a undisputed pussy who was always afraid of contact. Watch any of his film. No guts all glory
