It is a business, not a marriage.

It also must be noted that, even though he was born and raised in Mississippi, not one SEC school offered him. Recruiting was not as much of a science then as it is now.
Post-segregation era, Mississippi produced the NFL’s best running back and best wide receiver and Ole Miss let both still play at in-state SWAC schools.

It would be considered “bad business” decision by our current money driven culture. Walter Payton is a man with or without pads on.
I won't criticize 17 year olds for making these decisions, but I have a low tolerance for P5 fans( especially SEC) who pretend that they have " developed " these players who don't need them.

What the hell are you babbling? Walter Payton went to JSU because no SEC team offered him. His D1 offers were not good ones like Kansas State. I mean it worked out very well for Walter, but if he'd had an SEC offer from any SEC school he'd have taken it hands down. P5 schools do develop these athletes as they grow as players. Small schools do also. Some slip through the cracks of the P5's and fall to smaller schools and are successful. It happened a lot in the segregated south and post segregated south of the 50's through mid 70's. Not much anymore.

You agree with Alyne Payton. This interview is over 20/ 25 plus years old with Walter casually discussing turning down " P5" money in the early/ mid 70's. No agenda...he just simply answered a question about why he didn't choose a larger/ wealthier school.
So I guess you are against this “pay the players” revolution? Remember, this movement was a very racial issue in it’s incipient stage. The calls from black sports writers, civic leaders, and players were for these poor players to be paid because these rich , almost completely white, school athletic departments were “using” black players with no compensation.
Yet, you are now touting the opposite view tinged with race.
This is a microcosm of why I don’t gaf about all that whining anymore.

Pretty sure Shaq does the exact opposite of this.

He did talk about it on live tv.

Ah I read that as if we were talking about Shaq's donations to LSU after his time in school here.

No. He was a POS who routinely cheated on his wife. He maintained a side piece even when his wife found out about it, would be gone for weeks at a time, and would basically live two lives…one for himself, and one for the public eye. One of the best football players ever, but not a “man without pads on”.
This is the first negative thing I have ever read about Walter Payton. Dead serious… first ever.

Yeah, it was a different world when Payton went to JSU. I think most SEC schools had just dipped a toe into integrating teams. You had all the Mississippi SEC schools going crazy over Marcus Dupree 10 years later, but you still had Jerry Rice and Steve McNair go to HBCUs.

Mrs Payton understood the P5 process over 50 years ago & her son did not allow himself to be bought. And the open disrespect from many fans towards recruits & families confirms Mrs Paytons words that "they think little of you as a person"
50 years ago it was a lot easier to exercise your conscience. Many Blacks had no choice but to attend Black Colleges. Grambling State, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State, and the entire Black College league had some incredible athletes. Many of them are in the NFL HOF because of the culture of segregation. Today, these Black Colleges are looked at much differently than even Payton's era.

Am I right that you think this speaks highly of Payton? If so, wouldn't it speak poorly of the players that were willing to be "bought"?
I just don't agree.
