I don't mind talking about soccer at all. The fans just need to lose the pissed off Mormon routine.

I have a sneaking suspicion that those bars are a media created "spontaneous gathering" of soccer fans.
Wrong.
These gatherings have been happening, albeit not on this level, but they have been happening for a while. Most are organized by the American Outlaws, which do have a chapter in Baton Rouge

It's coming from both sides.

Fans get pissed off because every time something good happens, people come out of the woodwork to shite on it.

That's the thing, people shite on EVERY THING about EVERY SPORT, the fact that they are shitting on Soccer should be viewed as a good thing, but all the fans get defensive and pissy about it

Again, people get pissy when they spout ignorance. You can say, "soccer is my least favorite sport. I have zero interest despite having tried to like it." OK, fair enough. But when people say, "I hate soccer because every game ends 0-0 and the players do nothing but flop around the entire game and offsides is dumb and it shouldn't exist". Well, that's different and people who know the game are going to correct the false info.

We're talking about the entire US being represented on a world stage. It fricking should do better than the NBA Finals or the World Series.
You add to that the fact that ESPN has been shoving World Cup down America's throats and has hyped up the USA team as a potential great one in U.S. Soccer History, and yeah, people will watch. ESPN has marketed well, the games are on at times that are easy to watch for most people, and we're in the Group of Death. It's been a perfect storm.
And, frankly, I'm all for it. We should be better at soccer than we are and American youth may well be gravitating toward it due to parents steering their kids away from football, particularly at a young age.

I love these kinds of comments. Are you forced to watch ESPN?

Love how this news upsets people so much.
Im not sure I understand it either. I love the MLB and If someone posted that the NBA had better TV ratings for something I wouldnt take it personal.
I get the discussion, not the vitriol. The mere mention of soccer triggers some anger in some folks.

Is a perfect example. He/she has come to the soccer board multiple times to tell everyone how he feels about soccer.
Oh well. I like all sports. Glad soccer is on the rise.

Just like NBA fans in this thread? OR MLB fans in threads were "baseball is boring" is uttered?
Come on. Dont act like "Defensiveness" is unique to soccer types.

If you even mention baseball is boring you get "you don't know the beauty of the game and what to look for" ....when soccer fan uses same excuse baseball fan just ignores it.
I like baseball but baseball fan is a strange one. They will claim sports as basketball and soccer as boring but promote the awesomeness of a hit and run like its a homerun.

Has anyone? IRL I mean.
IMO college baseball is much like what many people accuse the WC watchers of. It's fun to root for your alma mater when they're good and in the down time between the end of basketball season and fall, but truthfully if they were bad, those same people wouldn't care.

I will say, I started watching soccer because the 2002 WC. I really picked up on the sport after the 2006 world cup. A few years ago I picekd up a premier league team (aston villa) that I watched nearly every weekend last fall/winter before tailgating for LSU games. The other Tuesday/Wednesday games I would watch pretty often.
This season I have started to try and follow the Houston Dynamo and with the new MLS TV deal that will be coming out for next season I expect a much bigger draw moving forward.
I agree that most fans watch the world cup because it's USA/once every 4 years/ nothing else going on but I also think it can be a great starting point for a future soccer fan. I enjoy watching many outlets of soccer including both domestic and international games.
It will be a very long climb for the MLS to become a big deal in the USA, but everyone that I know that have been to a soccer game (mls or USMNT) have said it was one of the most fun events they have ever been to. As more people see that the game will grow in the states.

I would hope you don't take facts personally.
I would also hope that you've come to terms with the continually decreasing popularity of baseball. Because that's also what we would refer to as a fact.

Its also a "fact" that the US Portugal was higher than all the NBA finals games. Seems like some folks took that personally.
Whats the context for that chart by the way? Is that World Series ratings? Im not surprised by that at all. Seems like all the major sports have had increases while baseball has fallen.

The World Cup has been more fun to watch since the U.S. team has improved. We have a good shot at history in this one: If we advance it will be the first time the USA has ever done it in back to back World Cups.
College football was my first love, followed by the NFL and NHL, but I'm really enjoying U.S. Soccer.
