In the US yes MLS is the best bet for growth.....
The world no, but it doesn't need growth in the world....

If you ask how most posters on the soccer board got into soccer, many will point to a specific WC. Most people won't dive head first into the sport. Some will, though. Some will just become a little more interested than before, which is good, too.

Ditto.

And full disclosure -- I like both basketball and baseball waaaaaaaaay more than soccer.

It's an interesting statistic that people will read way too much into.

Its really not. It will eventually have to become bigger but that will happen when the sport as a whole grows. That growth isn't being driven by MLS now and it doesn't need to be.

The Germany-US game will see an even larger audience than the Portugal match. I just drove past a bar and it was standing room only with people on the street watching the game.

I don't think so. It aired at 11am on a Thursday.

True, I just read where Game 2 of the CWS Final (UVA/Vandy)beat the World Cup match Tuesday. Granted it was Coloumbia & Japan, but the College World Series had over 50% more viewers(1.8/1.1)

How do you quantify 20 people watching the same TV? The ratings people won't know that. It will be one TV. Period.

That's quality ratings data right there.

They promote every sport they broadcast.

This isnt unique to soccer or the world cup. World Series, NBA finals, Superbowl...all the networks that broadcast these events promote the frick out of them. Saying this is different to other major sporting events in promotion just shows you dont pay attention to the bombarding associated with the others.

ESPN blows it out of proportion though. When you have 4 networks that need a total of 96 hours of programming a day on sports related topics, shite can get redundant real quick.

You really think that many individual tv sets are watching the SuperBowl, or maybe they found away to count them?

Yea 2 cities. So take that number and multiply by the rest of the cities in the country

Exactly. Cause its the fricking World Cup, I dont see anyone in here throwing around MLS numbers...

I watch swimming, skiing, and the hurdles once every four years... because its the usa vs the world, just like the world cup

Did more people in Boston watch the red sox or an mls soccer team (if they have one, but you get the point)

Comparing an event that takes place once every 4 years in which the whole country is pulling for the same team to a game in which 2 cities play each other and happens every year is not even close to the same thing

WOW, ive never heard of that happening at one bar before....

The soccer junkies are just as bad as the people who bash on it, especially in this tv numbers thread... Yes soccer is growing and will continue to do so, and at the same time no one gives a shite about MLS yet so everyone needs to relax
