You mean the program that was ranked in top 10 multiple times in the 70’s and went to 8 bowl games in 10 years? I think 2 of the 3 coaches before Mac won the Big 8 as well

In the 10 years before McCartney arrived, CU was 55-57-1 overall. They appeared in three bowl games over that ten-year stretch and shared a single Big Eight title. They weren’t relevant nationally. Which was the point.

Dude made Army a scary team to play. Only 3 losing seasons out of 9, and 4-1 in bowls. His squad almost beat #5 OU in 2018 IN Oklahoma, a team that had Kyler Murray and CeeDee Lamb. Someone needs to give this man a P5 job.

Still crazy to me that UVa got up to #1 in the country in the 1990 season. Helluva game they lost against GT.

Nice to see Tiller mentioned. Getting Purdue to the Rose looks like a better accomplishment as the years go by.

Speaking of Purdue coaches, an obscure one I’ll throw out is Jim Young. Dude managed to put together seven 9-win seasons coaching at Arizona, Purdue, and Army.

Meanwhile I'm hoping he burns out and retires.

Short of a complete meltdown over a period of several years he won't be fired.

Easy hire, steady hand and lots of mediocrity.

Too many people ignore his most successful period was with Gary fricking Andersen's recruits.

eta-And the defense has been carrying the team. And he takes a hands off approach to that side of the ball. Thankfully.

Wake Forest’s Dave Clawson. He has Texas A&M scared to play them.

Gary Pinkel.

He won at freaking Toledo, then had Mizzou within a Big 12 title game of playing for a national championship, all while making Mizzou attractive enough for the SEC to invite them in. Then he won 2 straight East division titles.

Since he left they've been shite.

Jeff Tedford took a horrible Cal team (1-10 the year before he arrived) and made them pretty respectable for a few years.

After health problems and bouncing around the NFL and CFL he joined the 2016 Washington team as an offensive analyst. UW won the Pac and went to the playoffs. Jake Browning was a sophomore and had a 43/9 TD/INT ratio and had a 167 passer rating. After Tedford left Browning's numbers fell. How much credit should Tedford get? No idea, I just know that Browning had his best season by far the year that Tedford was on staff.

In 2016 Fresno State was 1-11. Tedford was hired and in 2017 FSU finished 10-4 and went to the MWC championship game. In 2018 FSU won the MWC and finished 12-2. After one more season Tedford retired for health reasons.

He was my personal choice to replace Saban at the time (for better or worse).

Not that anyone asked my opinion.

Jeff Monken - Army

Army only had 1 winning season from 1991 to 2016. In 2014 Army hired Jeff Monken as their head coach. Since then…

2016 - (8-3)
2017 - (10-3) First ever 10 win season.
2018 - (11-2) First ever 11 win season.
2020 -(9-3)
2021 - (9-4)

That’s a remarkable turnaround. As an Army Veteran, I get just as excited…if not more excited…to watch Army Football as I do my Ohio State Buckeyes. It’s a special connection…that brotherhood and experience…and Jeff Monken is truly a General as head coach. I never thought I’d ever see Army become a Top 25 program in my lifetime and yet…Monken has made Army just that.

GO ARMY!!!!

Mark Mangino. Had Kansas in the top 25 and winning the Big 12 a while back. Think about how far that program has fallen since he left.
