Don't think Snyder is underrated, media...was all-in on him. He was lauded, praised, admired...Media sucked his dick...I mean he got so much love and rightfully so.

I would say Dick Tomey. He fell under the praise radar by national media...for the most part.

His "Desert Swarm" defense.

He led Arizona to the two of only three ten-win seasons in school history, highlighted by a 12–1 campaign in 1998.

quote:

On the heels of Stormin' Norman Schwarzkopf's swift victory in the '91 Gulf War, University of Arizona's head coach Dick Tomey assembled a college football defense for the ages down in Tuscon. All six leading tacklers on the team would end up in the NFL.

The defensive line was anchored with two college football Hall of Famers in Tedy Bruschi and Rob Waldrop, and, to top it off, it allowed barely 30 yards rushing per game, which at the time was the best run defense the game had seen in 30 years.

PAC-10 Coach of the year.

Mangino ate other coaches. At Kansas they had a shirt saying " Our Coach Can Eat Your Coach." He was very good with his offensive scheme.

As an LSU fan, I agree with this. MF had his teams ready to play every single game.

Meanwhile I'm hoping he burns out and retires.

Short of a complete meltdown over a period of several years he won't be fired.

Are you just tired of him? I get fans get bored. Obviously the offense is hard to watch, but it's Wisconsin FFS. Not like the talent pool is overflowing regionally beyond OL.

His WP% is much higher than his Big 10 colleagues James Franklin, Harbaugh, Ferentz, etc. Wisconsin does get the easier divisional draw tho.

Almost beat Tennessee in 1998. That’s the Tennessee team that went on to go 13-0.

His coaching tree includes
Andy Reid and Mike Holmgren to name s few along with others who he influenced
(Hal Mumme,Mike Leach)

Not sure he ever gets enough credit

Darn I forgot about Dick Tomey. I read an article about his efforts to revive a San Jose State program that was on the edge of collapse, suffering from reduced scholarships because of violations that occurred before he got there. He got them to their first bowl game in 20 years but then things went downhill again. But the effort he put in to revive a broken program, near the end of his career, seemed pretty amazing to me.

I was at that game. We got screwed by the SEC refs three times. The first two (yes, they called it twice) were equipment violations for socks too high. The last was a phantom pass interference call on Tennessee's game-winning drive that kept their drive alive.

I thought Howard Schnellenberger(sp?) was a good program builder.

Bill Snyder took over the WORST cfb program in the history of the sport, at the time. He nearly took them to a Title game. No one has done anything close to what he's done as KST.

yup, and he gets a lot of credit for that. not sure he's a good choice for this topic though

i'll go with Schiano (college, not NFL). before he took over for the first stint, they were a national laughinstock. they were ranked pretty high towards the end of his first stint. he's made them as competitive as can be, twice

before he was hired for his second stint, they got shut out NUMEROUS times by many teams in embarrassing fashion. they've lost to michigan by 1 score each of the last two years that he's been there
