UMass is expected to join the MAC in all sports starting in the 2025-26 academic year, according to multiple reports. This marks a return to the MAC for UMass' football program, which competed in the league from 2012-15 after making the jump from the Football Championship Subdivision. UMass' other sports currently compete in the Atlantic 10.

UMass football has competed as an independent since its departure from the MAC in 2015. The Minutemen have gone through three different coaches and failed to make a bowl game in the years since. They just finished their second consecutive season under coach Don Brown, who himself made a return to the program ahead of the 2022 season.

The addition of UMass will increase the MAC's membership to 13, an imbalance that would normally be rectified in a divisional format. However, the MAC announced in November that the 2023 season would be its last with divisions. Moving forward, teams will compete for a linear spot in the now 13-team standings, falling in line with a majority of conferences in the modern era.

I hate conference realignment.

UMASS was a weird fit in the MAC the first time, and they're a weird fit there now.

They probably shouldn't be FBS.

It feels just about every UMass fan is in shambles. Not often do you see the fan base upset when moving conferences. Likely be the top dog in basketball most years

The old A10 was such a fun basketball conference, like a AAA version of the Big East. Those days have been long gone anyways but still sad to see how the basketball landscape has been blow apart by realignment

There’s absolutely no reason UMass and UConn should have FBS football programs at this point

But UMASS pretty much sucked in it except for 5 years under Cal and a couple years right after running on those fumes.

Does UCONN follow UMASS to the MAC?

Really surprised they are moving basketball to the MAC.

I figured they'd try to get football in CUSA or just move back to FCS

UMass needs to go the path of Idaho and be put out of their misery and where they are more competitive.

College basketball in the northeast, even in the small conferences, was so much fun. Realignment and the death of the OG big east is absolutely shameful.

Is there anything UMass is actually good in? I suppose hockey?

I seriously doubt they'd move their basketball from the Big East to the MAC. They are probably waiting to see if they can jump into an opening from a school that leaves the ACC.

They were every bit as weird as UCF being in the MAC. Just never seemed right back then and doesn't seem right now.

I agree. I think there are a lot of FBS teams who should drop down, but no one besides Idaho will do it voluntarily.

It would be cool to see a football conference of UConn, UMass, URI, UNH, Maine, and Vermont. No one in that region really cares about college football, but I think that's because they don't all play each other. Based on how much they all hate each other in hockey, putting them all in a football conference would drum up interest in the region.

Goddamn he was good. That team probably should have won it all in 1995. They definitely should have beaten Oklahoma State.

Recognition that football is all that matters. UMass was in a good situation for all sports but couldn’t survive without a football affiliation

Sad

I don't understand this move by either side? If the MAC wanted to expand, why not go after CUSA schools like Liberty, Western Kentucky and MTSU?? Those schools actually make the conference better in football and at least make a little bit of sense geographically. It seems like CUSA is a conference that isn't going to be around very much longer either as their media deal is the worst in all of FBS. Why go after a school like UMASS that brings nothing to the table?
