UCLA spent 15% of their entire football budget on food last year

Under coach Chip Kelly, who sees nutrition as key to the making of a football player, the fare has gotten decidedly better — and decidedly more expensive. In 2018, his first year at UCLA, the budget for non-travel meals more than doubled to $2.6 million. The following year, the tab grew to $5.4 million, dwarfing spending at higher-profile programs and raising questions about a UCLA athletic department that reported an $18.9-million deficit for last year.
Through a public records request, The Times obtained more than 500 pages of invoices and receipts that shed light on food costs. Among the menu selections: Guajillo chili chicken, coffee-braised brisket, and pork chops smothered in candied apples and onions. During off-season workouts last year, UCLA spent more than $40,000 to import five barbecue meals from an Arizona-based restaurant. On other occasions, the program ordered hundreds of peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches from a Los Angeles caterer at $4.95 each.
The $65-million Wasserman center, which opened in 2017, includes a state-of-the-art locker room and barbershop but no dining hall. The program must pay to have food delivered and arranged on buffet tables for three, sometimes four, meals a day.
While the program plowed more money into areas such as support staff, recruiting and game expenses, spending on meals represented 15% of the team expenses and the single biggest increase in non-severance spending.
By comparison, other Pac-12 schools spent from $399,000 to $1.2 million on non-travel football meals in 2019, according to financial disclosures filed with the NCAA. That doesn’t include Stanford and USC, which don’t have to provide the information because they are private.

That's Bret Bielema territory.

But poor student athletes at UCLA getting free room, board and food that costs a "typical teenage student" 6 figures, is being oppressed by the man.

Sure. A proper diet as decided by team nutritionists can play a role in the development of a football team.

I'm sorry but if I'm the coach, I have a fiscal responsibility.
This isn't the Dallas Mavericks and that ain't Chip Kelly's money.
You're getting hot-dogs and hamburgers and chicken tenders and tacos and burritos like every other poor college student otherwise you'll get nothing and like it.
If they want to eat gourmet on their own dime so be it.
These are young kids, they don't need fantastic diets to perform, they can eat anything and still feel like a million bucks.
I wonder how much Oregon spends on food for athletes; they have a crazy eclectic cafeteria just for athletes that offers some pretty foo-foo fare that would fit nicely at Levi's Stadium.

all the other bullshite aside, why in the frick would a team in LA need to order from a restaurant in arizona?

i could be way off base here, but this doesn't seem THAT bad. the alternative is to pay for the labor and supplies, which would probably save some money, but not all that much. i suppose the other alternative is to just make the players make their own sandwiches. hard to tell if they would get roasted for doing that or not, honestly.

Not shocked, i was watching a video and it had a glimpse of a few schools eateries for the athletes. It's fine dining. Stations with different food options, and fruits(Not aTm), veggies, smoothie bars, desert bar,etc
Which is why TJ Moe calls bullshite on athletes who claim they go to bed hungry. If they go hungry, it's because they sold their card, which gets them all the food they can eat.

The athlete's cafeteria is 10X better than just the average student who gets Taco Tuesdays if they're lucky.

LSU along with essentially every other major D1 program has multiple nutritionist on staff along with a in house chef. Athletes have their own cafeteria that is 1000% better than the student cafeteria. I don’t understand how UCLA could build a facility without a cafeteria.

no surprise that you follow TJ Moe.

Because they have no fricking idea what they are doing in part because UCLA hasn’t had competitive facilities in years, if not decades, and the Pac 12 ain’t the place to really be looking at for ideas.
The only program in the conference which might have quality facilities is probably Oregon, due to the Nike money and being in a low cost state compared to Cali.

Seems pretty expensive

lets just say this, 100 players (I know they have less).
5.4 million for the year:
that is $54,000 per player, $148 dollars per day
now just use the actual # of scholarships (85):
63.5k per player, $174 dollars per day
That is downright, RIDICULOUS.
$174 dollars per days is legitimately 3 gourmet, fine dining steaks a day

I don't
But when athletes were crying poor, i did see a retweet of his, where he called bullshite, and claimed they eat extremely well. His exact words were, you go hungry, it's because you sold your food card.
And Mizzou has a super nice eatery for athletes.
