Went to The Athletic, which sometimes covers things more thoughtfully, and got this.

It's so maddening.
The reality is that "someone yelled a racial slur" should be #10 on the list of 10 possibilities every time something like this is iffy. Why? Because it so rarely ever happens. But when media, corporations and government gaslight the shite out of people into thinking sports fans just regularly shout racial slurs at players because there are so many n-word dropping racists among us, it becomes possibility #1. And TBH, even if this turns out to be the exception, it doesn't change the rule.
Real talk - in the present age, a white person is probably more likely to be the victim of an actual crime at the hands of a black perpetrator than a black person is likely to be randomly called the n-word by a white person. That's how rare the latter actually happens.
