re: Tulane QB Darian Mensah plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal

Once a player enters the portal, they're off the team. No reason for them to hang around.
This sucks for Tulane. Can't really build a program with consistency when you have to worry about your best underclassmen bolting every off-season.

Not true. Tulane had a couple of players play in the bowl last year after they were in the portal.

Really? Interesting. Then I stand corrected.
Maybe Emani Bailey was already in the portal when we played Marshall in the 2021 NOLA Bowl, though I didn't think he was. Alot of us just all had a hunch he was going to transfer after the game to TCU so he could join his brother on the team.

Why would college football have the portal open before bowl season?

Does it have something to do with following right behind signing day?
It does seem strange, though. Even if you say most of the bowl games don't matter, you've got teams in the CFP. Some dude who is a useful dime DB for say...Clemson, but doesn't think he'll start next season, could theoretically decide to enter now and commit to somewhere like UNC where he will start next year.
Then Clemson is without a guy who they could have used in needed 6 DB formations, or someone who would then be their key nickel back if one of the DBs further up the depth chart get injured. That could affect games that DO actually matter.

Yeah it is up to the player and the coach (not sure if the coach from the new team really has a say) if the player plays in the bowl game.

If I recall correctly, this is literally what the Coaches called for

This is the element of college football that has to be fixed. Big boys eating each other alive over high schoolers is one thing.
But this right here is a problem. Smaller schools won’t have a fanbase if every single decent player immediately transfers out.
They’ve got to get some type of contract figured out so at the very minimum, these schools are compensated for the loss.

NCAA ain't worried about that. Look no further than how much of the burden the non-P4 schools are having to shoulder from the NCAA "settlement".

He would kill it in South Bend next season.
Tulane has some solid skill players, really hope Summerall can keep them on board for next year. Makhi Hughes could be a household name at a major P4 school.

I believe he signed a new N.I.L. deal and said that he is staying with Tulane.
I hope Preston comes back next season although he was livid on the sideline towards the end of the Memphis game. He could easily be the WR1 next year.

If you don’t allow him to enter the portal, by the time the season is over and he can, a lot of spots will be filled
Though let’s be fair, they probably be tampering AF

He'll get a nice pay day, but weren't the Wave the only ones to offer him out of high school? Welcome to the Nil era
I mean everyone else is doing it and can't blame someone for wanting a raise, but man man CFB just ain't the same. I feel like I'm the old man yelling at the clouds now but I never thought I'd get to where I hate CFB, but I'm close.

I watched every snap of his. He improved as season wore on but he was protected against bad teams all season by pounding Hughes and controlling clock. He is not currently a mid to upper level P4 QB. He may get there at some point, but he threw to a lot of open WRs and didn't throw a lot of passes in many games while we rode the Running game. Leaving would be a long term mistake for him for his development.

All UL coaches have a rule that as soon as a player enters the portal, they're off the team and locker is immediately cleared out. But it's up to the schools/coaches.
I think that keeps a lot of the younger inexperienced players from testing the waters without an offer in hand. So, if you see a Cajun enter the portal, they likely have been tampered with and have at least one desirable offer in hand.

Pretty soon P4s won’t be offering anyone out of high school… Tulane and other G5s will be their minor leagues to weed out who is capable of playing big time football and who isn’t
100% correct
AAC
CUSA
Sunbelt
MAC
MWC
These conference will end up signing all but the best 5 star ultra elite players. The Big10, SEC and Big12 will simply take the players they like after a year or two of development.
The Big10, SEC and Big12 can exit the majority of the high school recruitment process.

No way, dude. Tampering is still illegal, and if it were happening, the NCAA would be all over it investigating those programs.
