Yao Ming would have to be up there if you believe there's 2 billion Chinamen in the world.

Not one mention of Shaq is asinine.
The dude is 7 foot tall and became the face of the NBA pretty much the minute Jordan retired.

I would think soccer and F1 would take up most of the top 5 just because of the global reach of those sports.
F1 doesn't pass the American wife test. My wife can name Ronaldo and Messi from pop culture, she couldn't tell you one driver...that ever existed.

And is all over media to this day. He's insanely famous in China, is in every other commercial in the US, etc.

Shaq is cool and all but he's debatable to be even in the top 5 just for basketball. This list was meant to be all time btw which i thought the inclusion of Pele and Ali made obvious.

You are right and wrong. Last time I saw the list, 3 were soccer players, 1 was Lebron, and the last was a Cricket player.

I see some lists that are obviously all time lists and no Maradona? I’m sorry but Worldwide Soccer is the most followed by a lot

There was a time when David Beckham was the most famous. So famous a Man U store was on a prime piece of real estate on Orchard St in Singapore. Everywhere Ivteaveled he was talked about, known, and people were wearing his gear.
Pele, Jordan, Ali, were all before big internet and social media. In today’s environment they would all be off the chart.

C. Ronaldo probably up there too.
I'd put him before Pele given that he's current and Pele was old 50 years ago.

That why Arnold Schwarzenegger would be top 5, a European who becomes governor of California, and think how many people world wide have seen the Terminator movies.

Yeah the people listing guys like Neymar, Mbappe, even Beckham but not including Maradona are wild. He, Lebron, and C. Ronaldo are probably the top of the 2nd tier.

I’d love to know how it would change if you went with a visual or verbal/ name. I think the list could vary greatly if you asked the top 5 most recognizable names, or if you made people pick their photo out of a line up.

quote:yes, he listed Pele. A name no American in the latest couple generations is even familiar with
Is this all time?
If it were most famous athletes worldwide today I’d be curious to see an argument against it being Ronaldo, Messi, Lebron, Alcaraz and Sinner. Don’t know what Indians and southeast Asians are into other than cricket but anywhere else in the world everyone knows those names

Maybe I’m giving too much credit at the moment to the top 2 tennis players that will rule the sport for the next decade plus but they will be some of the most recognizable in short order once they’re passing up Federer nadal and Djokovic for all time titles
