I get what people are saying when they refer to the bowls as “meaningless” but that’s far too simple/generic. It really depends on a program’s situation. I also think just because some guys sit out, doesn’t mean the game is meaningless. Kyren Williams and Kyle Hamilton are both out; I still think the Fiesta Bowl is very important to Notre Dame, for multiple reasons.
Even a program like Ohio State is still approaching the Rose Bowl as an important game. Some players are sitting out; but the coaches and players that are playing are trying to win. They’re not playing freshmen just to play freshmen; that might be a benefit of the extra practice time, but they don’t approach the game itself that way. They’re not playing walk-on seniors as some sort of “thank you for your service”. They’re trying to win.
An NFL preseason game is an exhibition; these bowl games mostly look nothing like an NFL preseason game in terms of intensity and how coaches approach it/apply game strategy. And comparing the bowls to a spring game is completely asinine. Spring games often aren’t even a 15-minute, normal format (normally it’s “offense vs defense”), they have gimmicks like putting linemen in to run the wildcat, make-a-wish stuff, can’t hit the QB, etc.

you're so cute. these guys basically have little life during the season. in your ideal mind you think these guys really want to go through a bunch of hassle over one exhibition game? They love the games but the games are only 1% of the experience.
The vast majority of these players don’t start and won’t play at the next level. If some senior is on his way out and doesn’t give a shite, fine, but if a guy is going to be in the mix for playing time next year, bowl practices and the game are a great time to try and stand out.

Exactly. One player’s decision to opt out is another player’s chance to start.

The Bowl System is THE biggest welfare system ever. Seriously, we are living in the worst era of bowl games...ever!!! Scrap it completely!!!! Expand the playoffs to 12 or 16 and those schools and those schools ONLY make the post season. You want to make the regular season meaningful...make it to where only 16 schools make the post season. Quit rewarding utter mediocrity with welfare bowl games. A bunch of 6-6, 7-5, 8-4 and 9-3 teams getting free handouts and coaches getting multi million dollar extensions for going to the taxslayerdotcom bowl. THAT is what’s ruining college football. 16 team playoff and a true playoff with a true champion. Make the regular season meaningful again. None of these players want to play in these meaningless games....yes OP...meaningless games!!! If you were 4 months away from becoming a millionaire, you wouldn’t play either. End the bowl system completely...expand the playoffs!!!

The you should probably stay off these boards.
Because the bowl games are meaningless. Not worthless, but meaningless. Worth the practices.

Yep, they have meaning for the biggest fans. For the casual fan, not so much.
The players I have been watching seem pretty motivated to be playing.

It’s entertainment. I used to be against the growing number of bowls. Now, I love it. I don’t necessarily think 6-6 teams should be ‘rewarded’ with a bowl game, but according to posters on here, it isn’t a reward.

They were meaningless then and they are meaningless now. LSU and other teams don’t even belong in a bowl game

Back in the day the final rankings came out before the bowl games.

Most hardcore fans are going to watch every game.
when my team loses its second game, I pretty much lose interest because I know we are heading to a meaningless bowl and are out of the playoffs.
Expand the playoffs and get rid of the bowls and people/players will be more vested in the product.
You want to run off the hardcore fans so that those who admit to not being fans of the game in the first place, can be happy?
You want to take what's contributing to the downfall of the product and expand on that?
I suggest you go pick up your knitting needles and let the real fans watch some football.

Agreed.
There’s also a big part of me that would like to outlaw NIL as a school and weed out the whores even if it meant perpetual 8-4.

I'm sure the most die hard of Auburn fans was tickled to death watching his 6-6 squad take on Houston in the Birmingham Bowl. Nothing quickens the pulse faster.

Indeed. The vast majority of bowl games have never been more than a fun exhibition game between two teams that rarely play each other. I don't understand why people can't enjoy them on that level.
