Who is paying for this?

Interesting. Usually out of state travel is for the upper echelon teams that are going to be featured on ESPN or they are having a hard time scheduling local games.
I thought so too. “Our” -use that loosely, is a good team but for our state/division, but not a Rummel.
Anyway just curious about this stuff. As I said all I’ve heard is “this Florida trip will be great and really boost the program!” Ok how? IDK Florida. Here’s my credit card!

As I understand they’ve been raising money for a year. The rest is on the families

Every state except Texas uses NFHS rules to govern play on the field so that's not an issue unless playing in Texas. Texas uses NCAA rules which have differences from NFHS...
Years ago, Louisiana also NCAA & changed around 1990. I was coaching at Boothville-Venice and we played at St. John in Gulfport. We complained about the clock running when it wouldn't be in NCAA. The referee said that we're in Mississippi today & we play by our rules! The next year, the other team complained about our rules. That's not an issue for Louisiana and Mississippi anymore.

We’re in MS and we travel to LA to play (Lakeshore HS in Mandeville) this year, also host a team from FL (Pensacola Catholic).

One reason is that it is difficult to schedule games when a program is elite. Unfortunately, most schools won't agree to a game so you have big-time programs from different states playing each other.
Massillon in Ohio has had this problem for decades since they went independent. They have 4 or 5 in-state schools that will play them annually, but then they have to fill out the rest of the schedule with whatever they can get. That's how I knew who Bishop Sycamore was before they became nationally infamous.
Just this season though, Massillon is bringing in Valdosta for the opener, then schools from Indiana, Delaware, and DC.

Unless its bordering neighboring states, I think it's pretty dumb. But, given recruiting and sites like 247, Rivals, On3, and given high school athletics and certain schools like IMG, Bishop Sycamore, and Mater Dei, it doesn't surprise me anymore.
