This is crazy to hear. Not saying I don't believe it because I completely do. I just didn't realize how bad it was. Especially considering how LSU has a reputation as being a bit boisterous and loud. So to hear LSU say this about another fan base must mean that fan base is REALLY bad and obnoxious. This post was edited on 8/13 at 1:32 pm
Yes. LSU has one of the most Boisterous fan bases. The difference is in 'respectful banter'. We'll banter with anyone but it is the rare exception to personally attack. This is where the confusion is.

I had a guy get in my face and tell me I was on the wrong side of the Mississippi.
Clearly doesn't know where Baton Rouge is.

I went to Morgantown in 2011. Had a great time and the fans were fine. A bunch of folks read about a team's fans reputation and roll with it....There is another fan base folks do that with, wonder who those fans are?...cough cough

Syracuse fan here. I travel everywhere I can and that's the only place I ever felt unsafe (we were good then, McNabb era). We were just walking campus minding our own business and the students partying before the game were pretty bad with the physical threats, throwing beer over our heads etc. Their section had actually been moved to the upper deck because they were so bad when close to the field...so they apparently started throwing batteries from the top. Fans actually rushed the field at the end and police were down there pepper spraying them. Locals were perfectly fine to us. Students were a problem.

Their students are like 55% out of state. I'm an out of state student myself so I have no issue with them. But when the number starts to overtake the local population you get this erosion of the culture and it either creates a dull atmosphere because people aren't born into it or they get there thinking what they see in animal house and on tv is how they should act. It's interesting to look at big state schools that actually have less than a 50% in state population. I'm glad LSU is 80/20. I've really gotten great exposure to the culture. When I visit WVU for my brother or other friends, literally 19/20 people I meet aren't even from there.

Dude, LSU fans only hate each other

Been to a game in Morgantown. Fans are friendly and cordial before the game. Less much so after they get boozed up and fall behind.
Had a few batteries flung into the visitors section, and a guy suggesting that he and I should fight in the concourse.

Went there for a Kstate game.
Had a few fans who were in our face, but for the most part very fun to hang out with. WVU lost and they still invited us in to drink at their parties. And they let us burn a stuffed animal outside which was hilarious.
Morgantown is a fun place with great environment.

Thoughts?
the college age fans and students were the biggest group of cocksuckers I've ever encountered on an away trip. Everywhere we went they just wanted to fight. before you say we were looking for a fight, we've been to every SEC venue and have never been in a fight or had issues
the 25+ crowd was very nice. many of them even apologized for their students actions and bought us drinks at bars
we had a good time overall
basically the students from jersey were assholes, the locals were very nice

Never been, but I had a good time with them in Atlanta. The ones I met said it's a gorgeous place to visit during the month of September. Looking at it online, I definitely have to make a trip soon.
Seems like they have a cool brewery to hit up

And the closer you get to WV border, you begin to hear those banjos play.
thankfully, while heading to Ohio U, we never had to cross the river, but those who were in Ohio from WV, looked inbred, and like mongoloids.

The older West Virginia fans are great. As expected. Very polite and courteous.
The younger West Virginia fans and students...well...yeah.

I have been to college football games for almost 30 years. I have probably been to at least 50 away games and probably to 20 different stadiums. Morgantown by far was the worst experience that I have ever had. It was unreal how disrespectful the fans there were.
I have said it 1000 times. If Auburn played in the Superbowl in Morgantown and I got 50 free tickets I would not go back, Not ever
There is no place that even comes close to how bad that place was.

When W Virginia came to Madison, UW officials wouldn't let their hillbilly mascot have is musket in the stadium, but they caved before the game.
Didn't stop the UW student section from taunting him over it.
I feel like their fans would be awful.

The younger fans and students are just this unique concoction of hillbilly, redneck, white trash, chin-strap beard, Abercrombie and Fitch baggy cargo short mix. It's like time stopped in the horrible late 90's and early 2000's period. Fred Durst must be a fashion icon in Morgantown. You'll still see frosted tips for God's sake.

Meh. I graduated 5 years ago and this wasn't the case even back then. There are some hill billies but you are in Appalachia. I don't think I saw any Abercrombie during all my years in Motown.

Graduated from WVU in '96. Less than half the student body is from WV. Then I would say the majority come from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Ohio. Actually when I was there it seemed like New Jersey provided the second most number of students from out of state. The Blue Lot, in between the hospital and stadium, is usually pretty good to away fans and people will generally take you in and give you food and drink. Unfortunately the away fans sit over on the student side of the stadium. Usually away from the students but they would still come in contact with them in the bathrooms and concession stands and having to go by the gates where the students enter and exit. It has the reputation of being one of the top party schools so students try and keep up the tradition. Day games aren't too bad but night games, where students have been drinking all day, gets a bit rowdy. I honestly haven't seen anyone assulted. The worst place I've been for a game was VPI. Those fans are 10X worse than WVU. Apparently you guys don't go to many NFL games. Makes college fans seem like choir boys. Almost forgot. The worst SEC fans we met were from Ole Miss. We played them in 2001 Music City Bowl and those fans were trash. I'm talking about the big money fans, in the suites, yelling at us because we were beating there arse. I'm guessing you go to any stadium, as an away fan, with a passionate fan base, you're going to get some insults flung at you. While I'm at it. The lamest fans were at ND. Total wine and cheese crowd. Their tailgates sucked.
