She's trying to impress someone sneaking this in. Not sure if it's an editor - a friend in the business, a work colleague.....whoever, it absolutely has no business in the article she just wants a pat on the back validation from someone not of his ethnicity, for whatever reason.

This is how this works in this social media age - someone finds this obscure article maybe 3 people would read otherwise and rages at it so much so that they distribute it on forums and piss others people off who distribute it to various other forums and so on, where thousands will now read something that was honestly a tree falling in the forest.
