While an all time great, are you really a generational talent if there is another player at the same position that’s arguably better than you?

At the time of the draft, Manning had everything a player needed to be a generational talent.

I know cycling is niche on MSB but we are currently experiencing a multigenerational talent in cycling. He’s a once in a 50+ year rider who is competing in the sport where the level has never been higher and he is still a clear level above everyone around him.

It is a greatly overused term. Football recruiting has "generational talents" in every class particularly at QB. Funny the NFL is lacking such talents in abundance at that position. Guess a generation isn't what it used to be.

Arguably, the best to do it in any sport. Generational needs to be more after the fact than a proclamation when careers are still just budding. Some people are just more easily impressed than others.
LeBron James
Tiger Woods
Muhammad Ali
The Big Three.

I knew MJ was going to unreal by being able to freelance his talents once he got away from Dean Smiths system.
Convenient when your predictions aren’t posted on a message board, and you can claim the correct take retroactively.

Who you talking about??
I wouldn’t mind going down a YouTube rabbit hole later.

I think of a generational talent as someone who has a skill set you rarely see. Travis Hunter playing both ways is a generational talent imo.

He’s a kid from Slovenia. He is going to win 5+ Tour de France’s while also winning the 5 biggest one day races on the planet. There has only ever been one other rider as talented as him Eddy Merckx and he was competing against in an era where the level of the sport was nowhere close to what it is today. That’s the differentiation for me between Eddy and Tadej. That’s why when it is all said and done Tadej goes down as the GOAT.
Just to give you a sample, he won the freaking Tour de France at 21 years old. The 2nd youngest ever to win the race and the youngest to win it since 1904.

Today it looked like the UCI let him use an E-bike.

Are they though? Mahomes, Jackson, Allen, Burrow, are all talented and successful.

Generational Talent List and justifications for inclusion
NFL
Patrick Mahomes - 3-time Super Bowl winning QB who is likely to get more. Don't need to say much else.
Justin Jefferson - JJ has 7500 yards and 40 touchdowns in his first five seasons. At only 25 years old, he's going to continue rocketing up all time lists and could snag the top spot on the receiving yards list at 35 years old if he continues on his current pace.
Derrick Henry - With one or two more seasons, Derrick Henry will be top ten in rush yards all time and is known as one of the last true bell cow running backs in an NFL dominated by the passing game.
Couple of guys on defense who I'm forgetting
NBA
LeBron James - 4-time NBA champion who is largely seen as, at worst, a top five player ever. Most have him top three.
Steph Curry - Another 4-time NBA champion who revolutionized the game and is considered the greatest shooter ever. Holds the records for most three pointers made and has the highest regular season free throw percentage of all time.
Kevin Durant - Seven-foot all-around superstar who has won multiple championships and is considered one of the best offensive players to ever play.
Could MAYBE add guys like Jokic, Giannis, Luka, and Harden.
MLB
Shohei Ohtani - A phenomenal two-way player who has won the World Series and an MVP playing as both pitcher and outfielder.
Aaron Judge - One of the best homerun hitters in the modern game and multiple-time MVP. One of only 32 players in MLB history to hit 50 home runs in a season, and he's done it three times
That's probably it
Golf
Rory McIlroy - Five-time major winner and one of the very few golfers to complete the career grand slam. I wouldn't have included him here without the career grand slam, but his record is that of an all-time great
Scottie Scheffler - Already won the Masters twice and is only 28 years old. Will probably win 5+ majors in his career barring injury. Including Scottie on this list might be a bit of a stretch considering he only has 13 wins on the PGA Tour.
Don't know enough about the NHL to include it. Feel free to drop those guys here if any exist

I think you could allow a few of those. Mantle and Mays were two CFs whose careers overlapped that would be considered "generational talent". Gretsky and Lemieux (though hampered by injuries) were another example.
