How's pro Golf faring in the post-Tiger era? Not well.

Tiger's personal appeal was about 95% media pushed. He has the personality of a doorknob. If Tiger had been a blonde haired, blue eyed country club kid he would have gotten a tenth of the run he got in the media.

Celtics up 20 in the first against the Knicks. I assume the Knicks will come back and make it a close game going into the 4th.

In my opinion it’s when 5 guys a Lee playing as a team, constantly moving, cutting, screening, and passing the ball. Think early 2000 spurs offense.

When the ball is whipping around the court it’s just so much fun

Yet we have more of this today than in the era people promote as the best/halcyon era

The old iso offense of the 80s-00s was terrible.

Gameplay is boring

Analytics have “solved” the game

Players are too friendly with each other

Players mail it in during games more than athletes in any other sport

Stars in the NBA don’t seem likable

It’s all of this plus two more, players having too much control over their contracts/forcing their way off of teams AND to the analytics point, the game strategy has been “solved” so the margin of error is so small that it forces the horribly flawed officiating of the sport more into the open

The athletes are too big and too fast, and now they act and flop to exaggerate contact so it’s turned a hard game to officiate into an almost impossible one, and a few free throws make a big difference per game since everyone is playing the same game.

So you have boring games in a season that’s too long (and no drama since everyone makes the playoffs anyway) with no guarantee you even see the star players playing on any given night you tune in or buy tickets, small market teams losing hope they even keep their stars long term…and then when you finally do tune into a game that is Star vs Star and players actually try, you see games riddled with poor calls leaving you frustrated and angry

I know.

Current players are generally more skilled than ever, objectively shoot better than ever and assists are at an all time high.

And it looks like viewership has gone back up over the second half of the season but we'll see if those numbers bear out during the rest of the season and playoffs.

Players were much more likable back in the day and even if you hated a player you respected how good they were. Today, all they do is cry while they play half the games their counterparts did and worry about building a brand. The NBA was the brand and it promoted its stars.

Its the players. They are just unlikeable.

Its not the players, its the game they play. The vast majority is a collection of long range jump shooters (and as a group, they do that extremely well) playing a non-physical, defensively lacking, finesse game resembling All-Star games of 20 years ago. This isnt all players, but it is the majority.

Its just not a good product if you are long time fan of basketball.

Kareem, Bird, Moses, Isiah, and even Jordan beneath the corporate image, were all unlikable as people. What made them great to watch is they played a game that forced them to be ruthless in order to win, which as fans, we love to see.. If they were playing todays brand of professional basketball they would be a lot different type players. Or they wouldn't be in the league.

Those missing games are the older gen mostly, which is who NBA pimps. For example SGA has missed 1 game this year.

Thats the crux of the problem. The league keeps squeezing every pound out of aging stars who are always taking games off. And not the risers who are playing every game possible

I think player likability is about the same as it has been for years.. There are some good dudes and knuckleheads just like always. The skill level offensively is greater than it has ever been. The shooting, ball handling and passing can just be insane. The issues are: there is no “face” of the league right now, there are no team rivalries, there are no player rivalries, styles make fights and everyone plays the same style, the season is a marathon and marathons are boring to watch, defensive intensity is rationed to particular moments (or certain regular season games and the playoffs), the game is officiated to benefit offense and things are only loosened up for the defense in the playoffs (similar to the NFL), player movement between teams is a blessing/curse (fun to see new combos, hard to build team identity when so many faces change). I started watching the NBA during the Magic/Bird days. The game has changed in a way similar to the NFL. In both leagues, physicality and defensive focus gave way to an offensive, spread game. College football and the NFL seem to be seeing a pendulum swing back towards physicality and defense (the Eagles’ Super Bowl win is the most recent example). I keep waiting for something like this to happen in the NBA. In the meantime, I will keep watching. I do love the game.

KD being allowed to join the Warriors was the death knell. LeBron and the Big 3 on the Heat were only bad for the Eastern Conference, the West still had good teams who could compete. Steph, Klay, and Draymond were such a good trio, that removing one piece would keep the Warriors competitive, yet said piece on any other team gets that team at a minimum to the playoffs. Adding another massive star in Durant should never have been allowed to happen, and that the Warriors had cap room is proof that the Cap is too low.

The NBA Cup is a bad competition that tries to put meaning into meaningless midseason games. Expand the tournament: Tell the G-League to field an All-Star Team, get as many teams from Europe as you possibly can, National champions from other countries. Hell, open a $2M fee and anyone who posts it with 12 participating players can come play.

All Star Game: Return to East vs West, and the winning team gets Home Court in the Finals.

Fixing the Regular Season: Home Court Advantage in the Playoffs go to the head to head winner in the matchup, with Overall record used only if the head to head was a tie.

2014 Spurs is the team that always comes to mind. The offense they were running against the Heat in the Finals was the closest thing we'll ever see to perfect basketball. I believe they would have beaten any team in NBA history in that series given how flawlessly they played.

If the NBA starts losing money will they still be able to support a money losing product like the WNBA?

The individual athleticism of today is incomparable but the game has grown stale.

Individual stars but rare compelling team stories or rivalries anymore.

Yup. That team was playing its best ball in the Finals. They absolutely carved up the Heat.

I don't know why others don't enjoy the NBA as much anymore, but I know why I don't. It is twofold:

1. The style of play just isn't as intriguing as it used to be, for me. It's shoot a three or drive and intentionally get fouled. I understand that is the most efficient strategy, but it isn't the most enjoyable, for me. I see a ton of flops every game too.

2. The regular season effort is garbage. Absolute garbage. The proof of this is the playoffs, when magically, they all start giving a shite again.

It's a bunch of overpaid prima donnas. Add to that the fact the do everything they can to have high scoring games by allowing atrocious traveling etc. and it just a shite product. I absolutely love college bball and I don't watch a single NBA game until the playoffs, and then maybe a handful of those at best

This is part of the problem as well. From WWW:

“The final two minutes of the Pistons/Hawks game just took 21 minutes and 52 seconds of real time to complete. I believe that to be the record for this season thus far”
