I also think there is a bias for players rated from Texas.

I do as well, but also think Mack and his staff while recruiting excellent athletes are not getting the best guys for their program.

I have suspected many Texas HS football players are overrated for a while.

The people talking about talent, what about the above? It may very well be that but the thing that makes the most sense right now is that Diaz made a tweak in the off-season that isn't working.

California for one. Texas produces more players who go on to play Div I football, but California produces more players who go on to the NFL. Florida has half as many HS football players as Texas, and almost as many go on to the NFL.

They are overrated in the sense they are better than most coming out of high school but their ceilings are lower because they come out already more developed than players from other states in play books, weightlifting programs, and coaching with their particular positions.

Basically, it takes players from other states more time to learn the same football skills kids from Texas have and they are forced to rely more on their talent alone.

So the ratings don't really take that into consideration.

Does anyone really say that Texas is better than California or Floria? I think pretty much everyone agrees that those are the top 3 and they are all very close

Coaches don't miss tackles and blow coverage. Every year we see average/bad players get drafted some end up doing well because they found the right fit it doesn't mean they weren't bad back then.

Stupidest post I've read in a while. You know very little about coaching and how it relates to talent/end product.

This is totally on Mack and Diaz. I didn't go to the game Saturday but several I know who did commented how Texas looked so much bigger than OU in the pregame warmups.

But the video imbedded in this thread tells all you need to know. Players slow to the ball, forgetting how to tackle, out of place, secondary getting outrun by a full back, etc. Plays like that have been happening ALL SEASON against them.

You're basing this on two an half years of short comings by UT? When UT won more games than any other program in the country from 01-09 the ceilings of their recruits sure seemed high.

Mack is a dead coach walking, has been ever since he lost in '09. Nobody wants to hear it but Saban processed his arse.

You guys didn't really humiliate UT to the point you describe. I mean they were in a position to win/tie late with GARRET fricking GILBERT at QB.

Yeah, from '05 to '09 Texas was 4-1 against OU and played in two NC games and came within a hair of playing in another. Same type of recruits on defense.

Chizik and Muschamp were the D coaches though.

Chris Davenport and russel Shepard were also Five Stars for LSU. Shep has been abysmal. Davenport has not seen a snap in 3 years

There is something to this - some of the most successful HS programs in Texas (e.g., Lake Travis where Gilbert came from) don't have a great track record of guys developing in college. They've reached their peak development in HS.

The problem is, none of the Texas players that have been stinking it up this season went to those programs.

As evidenced by that video - tackling is atrocious. If coaches can't teach tackling that's on them. Players who consistently miss tackles or show an unwillingness to tackle shouldn't be playing - and that's on the coaches too.

I don't understand this theory that "they recruit too early." Those kids are all highly coveted kids who everyone in the country wants. It isn't like any of those guys on their D didn't have offers from other huge legit programs. For example, how many of those guys would Bama LSU OSU and Florida taken out of high school? Likely most of them.

It has to be a development thing when they get to school

Yes, it's said many times over.

I think a lot of the kids in Texas mature early due to the emphasis placed on HS football and don't improve as much as some others in other states.
