The top programs break away, form NFL lite with a CBA and a salary cap. Then we'll all be in here bitching about the good ole days when we could argue about conferences.

USC certainly played their part in making this happen

Before inserting your “who cares about meaningless bowl games (unless you win)” hot take, the SEC’s 2-8 bowl record, excluding two SEC vs. SEC playoff games, was not only the worst in league history, but the SEC was favored to win seven of the 10 games.

And it’s often mismatches with SEC not playing their other conference equivalent like:

LSU (SEC #10) vs Houston (Big 12 #4)
Missouri (SEC #8) vs UVA (ACC #2)
Tennessee (SEC #9) vs Illinois (Big 10 #7)

That one is a bit closer as they were both 8-4 going into that game

The SEC had the most teams in the playoffs this year too and that didn't really help what you are talking about up there

Former LSU coach Ed Orgeron, on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast in December, said the biggest difference in the SEC was the creation of NIL. “Back then, we used to walk through the back door with the cash,” Orgeron said. “Now, we just gotta walk through the front door with the cash.”

I appreciate that he's not pretending any more.

SEC is in trouble with NIL. They lost their recruiting crutch.

Here’s the thing - I’m a southern homer and ALWAYS rooted for the southern team to beat the northern or western teams. And because I’m an alum of a southern ACC school it was never an issue until SEC fans turned college sports into a conference thing. It use to be regional pride so an Auburn win was treated the same as a Duke win, etc.

But the “it just means more” mindset has turned everyone against the SEC, especially when everyone knows the “it just means more” really meant “we’ll pay morons who can run and jump”.

Now that the NIL and portal era has shown that the SEC mystique was completely manufactured it is fun to watch SEC fans try and come to grips with it. Sure, the preseason polls will let you guys beat your chest about rankings but the expanded playoffs are where the truth is revealed and has shown these preseason rankings are as legit as the tooth fairy.

I still root for SEC teams, sans UGA for traditional reasons we all respect, and I’m glad the days of “it just means more” are over. Root for your team and enjoy the good seasons and suffer thru the bad. This sport is at its healthiest it’s ever been because every team has hoop because the field is level with no super teams like we saw all over the past 20 years when Saban and Kirby bought and coached all star teams. Right now none of us have a clue who the best teams will be. Some will pick UGA because of coaching and youth with a returning stud QB. Some will pick Texas. Some will say Cignetti can rebuild. Some will pick Columbus hair dye. But the point is we don’t know which is fantastic for exciting Saturdays every week. No more just show up and win games.

The "SEC Speed" narrative started in one night

Even that was piggybacked off Jimmy Johnson's and Bobby Bowden's Miami and FSU rosters. SEC just perfected the model by developing DL guys with it and stockpiling them.

its more about limiting the top tier programs from stockpiling talent and developing guys for 3-4 years. This season especially felt like there were not any truly great teams, a couple of really good and a bunch of meh.

The first part is why. Which is related to the portal/transfer rules.

Teams now aren't stockpiling talent since they can transfer with no penalty.

Let them win another championship, and watch them come out of every crevice chanting this shite again

I remember seeing this in bowl games and cringing at the crowds chanting SEC, SEC, SEC.. The argument was always how when the SEC teams win, it supports how great our team is, bowls win put more money in the shared pool... But they'd trip over themselves when asking other LSU fans why they want to see Ark, Ole Miss, Bama... win as our team is directly competing against them in the recruiting battles.

No it’s not, much of its dominance as far as titles go was boosted by one of best dynasties in CFB history. So a regression is expected

There are no signs that it’s crumbling or lagging behind its competitors.

This is the reason. You don't need Bama Boosters giving jobs at beer distributorships to get talented players now.

There are absolutely signs it’s crumbling - it’s called actual playoff and bowl results. The SEC is just now another conference now. You simply have to accept it. Alabama was just completely obliterated by freaking Indiana. Now sure, ESPN will ensure the SEC is well represented in the preseason polls because of the TV contract but the reality is preseason polls are never correct.

When the ACC was 2-7 in bowl games you guys were quick to point out how that mattered. When an SEC won a Natty you made sure that counted. Now that we have 3 straight years where the SEC didn’t get a team into the Natty you say that shows nothing?

Like everything in life - success breeds success initially but then leads to softness, It’s just human nature.

Huh?

That makes nearly no sense. Especially when comparing the two things here.

It is ridiculously too early to bury the SEC in any sport right now. The frick are you even talking about?

And the other thing, I mean, do you watch the draft? Do you watch NCs?

The SEC had better athletes. It was infinitely more valid than saying, in 2026, that the SEC is toast in sports.

I’ll never pull for Texas to win the CWS for selfish reasons. We just got a little breathing room between us and Texas in total baseball championships lol.
