Are you proposing that Alabama should pay off UAB if a student athlete decides to transfer between the 2 schools?

As long as the rule outright prevents free transfer in conference I have no problem with this.

This may not be as bad as some think. To counter the full potential of bad effects, the NCAA just needs to limit this to one transfer. If you transfer again you have to sit out. They have already required all scholarships be four years so you won't have situations where coaches are cutting guys just to get another one in.

We know that the NCAA only allows 25 new players per year and 85 total scholarships. Most schools scholarships consist of about 30% freshman. That increases when you count redshirt freshman.

Let's put out a hypothetical. I'll start with the theory that there are 15 schools that have a chance to win the NC. If those 15 schools sign 5-10 4/5 star freshman, then accept 15-20 transfers, you could have a team of 85 scholarship players consisting of 5 freshen, 15 sophomores, 45 juniors (all with NFL draft grades), and 20 seniors.

When did they require all scholarships to be 4 years? I haven't heard of a change since they allowed a school to offer a 4 year scholarship. It actually makes it easier for a coach to nudge a guy out. If a coach tells a player "I don't see you starting or playing much in your senior year", that player is more likely to transfer since he doesn't need to transfer down a level.

How about to promote balance, transferring without sitting out should be allowed in the following 2 scenarios:
-transferring from P5 school to non-P5 school (this rule is already in place for FBS to FCS transfers)
-following a coach or assistant to another university

So you want no scholarship limitations either?

If coaches can leave at a moments notice, with no regard to the contract they signed, the player should have some flexibility as well
I'm kind of with you, but I don't think they should be able to just freely transfer. In my opinion, I think it should be if a coach leaves for any reason, like accepting another job or even if they retire, or if they are fired for whatever reason, the player should be able to transfer at season's end without having to sit out a year. However, if they just want to transfer bc they aren't getting playing time, they should have to sit out a year.

I just think it's going to open up a flood gate of transfers and it will end up being bad for the college game and ultimately, the player. It would be nice if the player choose the school bc it's where they wanted to be and get a degree from, but we know that's not always the case.

A lot of players commit to coaches over schools, which is completely understandable. Most big time athletes want to make it to the pros and go to the coach they feel will help get them there. It's probably not the best thing to base a big life decision on, but that's how it goes.

The NCAA let's other athletes from most other sports to currently do this. They restrict it to a one year waiting period for football, men's and women's basketball, baseball and men's hockey.

Every other sport you can transfer once and be eligible immediately if in good standing and are given a release.

I could actually see this hurting the big time programs because keeping depth may be an issue.

If Cardale Jones could have transferred out of Ohio State without sitting out a year when he was named a third stringer, Alabama would have won the national title in the 2014.

It could create depth issues, but I really think it would be about like it is now.
There wouldn't be a rash of transfers.
