I think everyone realizes he's a really good coach, but they hate the amount of attention he gets in relation to his results on the field.
To this point, his only conference championships in college happened at the University of San Diego, so when he's included on short lists for "best coaches", he's being held to a standard that he frankly hasn't reached yet, fair or not.

Prior to Michigan, what did he really have the opportunity to win?
San Diego is a low level fcs school, and Stanford has never won anything. He inherited a 1-11 team and won a bcs game a few years later. I’m not sure what more he could have done at Stanford.
He needs to win something very soon at Michigan though.

I’d agree except Ohio st and even penn st have had much more success in recent years with neither being in the south.
Ohio is still a loaded state for high school talent and Meyer is a great national recruiter. Penn State recruits PA, NJ, and the Virginia Beach area really well. There is plenty of high school talent in all of those areas.

When does David Shaw finally start getting credit for Stanford? Harbaugh left after the 2010 season...

It's more pity at this point. If you can have pity for a guy who is way overpaid to coach.

Shaw has been great at sustaining/elevating, but Harbaugh took over a program that was as bad as Kansas is now and left a 12-1 Orange Bowl winner

Northern Virginia and Maryland kids also love Penn State. They have a pretty wide recruiting net.

When you’re schools with the history of OSU, Michigan and Penn State, it really isn’t that hard to recruit, the history and pro players you’ve produced makes the argument for you just gotta assure parents that you yourself will uphold that and you’re as good as gold mayne

he gets all the credit for sustaining. he is a great coach in his own right

the mystique and greatness of the Michigan football program and their fans desire that they uphold that greatness relative to the championship chase, expectations should be high always.
That mystique and greatness has won one NC since 1947.
Not so mystical or great.

And 26 Conference Titles since 1947.
And played in 19 Rose Bowls since 1947.

Honestly, he’s just strange. Let us not forget that he has had sleepovers with recruits.
Also, the whole underachieving thing. People seem to put him at the Saban, Meyer, Dabo level, when he hasn’t produced results worthy of being there.

The guy that took 9 years to win a title at Clemson? Are you gonna give Harbaugh that much time? I hardly doubt that.
Let's be real, the reason all of you hate him is because of the satellite camps. That's it. "How dare he come into the south."

Harbaugh was 10 yards away from winning a Super Bowl with a running back at QB who is now out of the league.
Name me a current college coach who was that close to winning a championship at the highest level in the sport?

This was back during the inception of the read option and before the league had figured out how to stop it.
You don’t hear Dolphins’ fans bring up all those games they ‘almost won’ with the wildcat

CK rushed for 72 yards in that game...mostly all on scrambles.
And lets not forget the Niners had to go through the Seahawks.
The only team they actually burned in the playoffs were the Packers.

It's just silly to throw in the interim record year for Dabo. He didn't light the world on fire his first two years, and finished year three with a terrible Orange Bowl loss.
It's the time period after that that cemented his status as one of the best.
I agree Harbaugh should get more time. He plays in what is today the toughest division in CFB. Michigan fans would be crazy to fire the guy... Nobody better is walking through that door.
I also don't think he will consistently beat OSU as long as Meyer is there. Meyer is recruiting at a top 2-3 level consistently and has a great coaching staff.
I think people dislike Harbaugh because he seemed to come in with an arrogance about himself and hasn't delivered. Things like the weird old school glasses to draw attention to himself.

To be fair, lots of Michigans history (especially their early history) is filled with home wins as they were not good at playing home and home series fairly. As example:
8 games played @ Ann Arbor
3 games played @ Nashville
1 game played @ Ann Arbor
0 games played @ Lexington
4 games played @ Ann Arbor
0 games played @ Columbia North
Never played Alabama or Auburn in AL
Nobody will dispute the early success of Michigan but their in state rival reveals much about Michigan as anything else.
1898 - 1959 52 total games played
67.31% = 35 Michigan wins
25.00% = 13 Michigan State wins
07.69% = 4 Ties
However, viewed by home field
86.54% = 45 games played in Ann Arbor
13.46% = 7 games played in East Lansing
VS
1960 - 2017 58 total games played
58.62% = 34 Michigan wins
39.66% = 23 Michigan State wins
01.72% = 1 Tie
However, viewed by home field
50.00% = 29 games played in Ann Arbor
50.00% = 29 games played in East Lansing
