(ranking out of 131 teams)
The reason why wins are generally meaningless on opening day?
Auburn whipped last place Umass (131)
USC beat Nevada (130)
TAMU beat New Mexico (129)
Oklahoma beat Arkansas State (128)
Opening weekend just blows
LINK
#1 Georgia bravely took on the #37 ranked FCS team

I think there's a perception of competition that gets lost some times.
Is there REALLY that much of a difference in playing the 50th ranked team at home versus playing the 100th ranked team at home if you're a Top 10 team with expectations of playing for a title?
Other than perhaps name recognition, the only slight difference will be the final point spread...but under no circumstances should either give you an actual game.
Also, OOC games between big names schools at neutral sites during the season are The Devil and a complete slap in the face to season ticket holders of both fan bases...

There's a fairly big difference in the level of athlete and to ignore this is pretty stupid.
The point spread of some of these games lead to a recalibration of expectation for teams. Whether it's fair or not.

Won't happen as long as money is the number one priority, and it always will be.
The schools make much more money in these games as compared to home and home series, they have much less overhead and profit a larger number.
Fan opinion doesn't matter anymore.

UMass isn’t the worst, they won in week 0.

Not entirely. They're a fun road trip usually against an opponent you may not see that often. However, when they become the norm like Alabama was doing every year to open the season, they do get tiresome and rob both fanbases of a chance to visit other campuses. I'd much prefer home and home series (like we did with PSU a decade ago and Texas currently). But, in moderation, the neutral site openers against a top opponent are worthwhile.

quote:Yes, probably about 2 or 3 TD’s difference on the game spread.

Thats like the difference between scheduling Mizzou or Oklahoma State instead of Georgia State or Eastern Michigan

I really enjoyed seeing UF lose in the Thursday night game and today’s LSU/FSU game will be epic.
But yesterday, that was absolutely the WORST opening Saturday of college football I can ever remember.

Coach Prime saying the Heisman should be in Travis Hunter’s crib single-handedly put it above some

What a fall. They used to be so fun to watch with the pistol.

Agree 100%. Worst Saturday slate I can remember. Can’t wait for LSU- FSU. I get it but they could have put together at least 1 top 15 vs top 15 game on Saturday.

Losing to an instate G5 like Texas State usually gets a coach fired if he can’t pick off 1-2 conference big dogs he isn’t supposed to beat.

Chris Ault doesn't get nearly enough credit for how innovative that offense was.

Yeah, we really need to disincentivize teams from playing the only interesting matchups on the schedule.
Pick a poision; if you want good or interesting games, you have to have the Neutral site incentives. Otherwise, it does not happen, and you get more Contender vs. Mississippi Valley States.

Their approach now is to take all the players Pac-12 coaches are processing. Most of these guys are flat out terrible.

No you don't. Teams need to stop being scared to schedule home and homes out of conference. The atmosphere was electric for both of the Georgia/ND games, for example.
I really wish the committee would harshly punish shite OOC scheduling.

This...plus it gives fans opportunities to check out new places.
Games like UGA/ND, FL/Utah, OSU/ND are good for the sport in general
