They weren't stars yet. The dunk contest made them stars, which is the purpose of the contest

I watched it last night. Simply incredible...it is embarrasing what the dunk contest has become. Charles Barkley had a good rant at the end of last nights.

The dunk contest, and the entire weekend for that matter, will never be what it once was.

well there has been a gap. a guy like demar derozan put on a show, but blake griffin was given the contest

...and he became a star

Exactly having 20+ dunk contests there comes a time where every dunk humanly possible has been done

I'm of the opinion that the 2000 contest and VC essentially broke the game. There's no where you can really go just using yourself and a ball.

There is definitely some truth to that, but the dunk contest seems to be more anti-climatic year after year. Mainly because of the five missed attempts before the successful one.

The J-Rich/Des Mason ones were awesome. And Iguodala put on a show one year and was absolutely robbed.

I'm gonna say Nate Robinson ruined the dunk contest.

yeah they change up how they do the contest. they used to let you have a certain # of attempts, but the favorites would sometimes frick up so they went with the time-based rounds to help them out

as an example, look at Derozan in 2011

look at his dunk right after 0:45

that's better than anything VC did in 2000
