Franchise was the most hyped rookie that year.

T-Mac showed enough promise that year to be as coveted as Tim Duncan and Grant Hill in that summer's FA market. Those Raptors were the "it" team.

These were notable players who certainly weren't getting cut at any point in the season.

You must not have watched many Toronto games in the early 2000s. Vince Carter in his prime was inhuman.

i thought we meant just dunk contests

in-game i'm going with the Reign Man

the 2 best dunks i've ever seen VC throw down in-game (not counting the olympic one which is amazing) are (1) a reverse he did at UNC and (2) an amazing dunk he did with and1

Rucker Park/And1 Dunk

That's what should happen in the dunk contest. If we see a dunk that we've never seen before, people should just rush the court and declare the contest over.

A contested dunk is ALWAYS better than an alley, my friend. Always.

Besides the Olympic dunk, there are so many VC dunks that are unreal.

Tim Duncan, Ben Wallace, the list goes on and on.

The man murdered pride every time he drove to the rim.

Ah. The ol' hook and ladder alley oop.

Hopefully one day LeBron dunks one of those full court Dwyane alleys. That's the only thing I can think of that might rival that play.

Last great dunk contest. The only one that has came close since then was the 2008 one.

They may not have been stars at the time but everyone knew they would one day. People are saying that about Jeremy Evans and James White.

Terrence Ross showed how everyone can still be creative and flashy without all the crazy props.

Vince Carter jersey was a prop . Josh Smith wearing Wilkins jersey is what starting this prop thing in the first place.

vince carter became a star AFTER/DUE TO the dunk contest

The dude was the 5th pick in the draft, won rookie of the year in 99 and then averaged 26/6/4 in 99-2000.

francis wasn't a star

2nd pick in the draft. On his way to winning ROY

tmac wasn't a star

Struggled his first couple of years, but you could see he was on his way to becoming a really good player. 15/6/3 at 20 years old

Stackhouse was a former 3rd overall pick averaging 23 points per game.

Larry Hughes averaged 23/6/4 in the 99-2000 season

Ricky Davis was the only player that wasn't considered a "rising star"

If you can't see the difference between those guys and this years class I don't know what to tell you. When the best player in the dunk contest is Kenneth Faried, something needs to change.

Let me rephrase. He was the one who started the recent trend of it every year. Dee Brown had the pump shoes too.

that doesn't make him a superstar

same point. how many rookies this year are superstars?

quote:

Struggled his first couple of years, but you could see he was on his way to becoming a really good player. 15/6/3 at 20 years old

again, this is why he was great for the dunk contest. he had potential to be a star and this showcased him

quote:

Ricky Davis was the only player that wasn't considered a "rising star"

but he was considered a rising star. your memory is jaded by how they ended up. ricky davis was seen as a future star for sure

i posted last night that there was an issue with the guys this year

faried is a rising star and a potential star

ross is the exact type of swingman who fits in this sort of showcase

bledsoe is a future star

evans...just a dunker

james white is a novelty that fizzled

green was a throw in (who was a rising star 5 years ago )

what other young guys would you have put in the contest? green was a fill in b/c there aren't that many out there right now

I'm watching old contests on Youtube. 2000-2003 were greatness. JR Smith was robbed in 05 (behind the back dunk). Iggy was robbed in 06 (from behind backboard). Dwight was robbed in 07 (sticker). Nate ruined the contest for me. Once was enough (4 damn times). He should have never won pushing off of Dwight. Blake was a joke too. If he had jumped over the full car, I'd have given it to him. I hated the choir theatrics too.
